Panther volleyball goes 1-1

The Lady Panther volleyball team claimed the first six points against Lander’s Lady Tigers on Thursday and never let go of the lead. On Friday, Buffalo beat Powell High School in three sets.

“Thursday night the girls came out ready to take control from the first serve,” said PHS head coach Randi Bonander.

Brook Sweet was the first server of the game and had a combined total of four aces for the night. Before she relinquished her time at the line in the first set, the score was 6-0.

The score was 13-6 when Lander’s second server went to the line; Powell prevailed in the opening set, 25-13.

“A huge factor in our domination was being able to work through mistakes without letting them multiply on top of each other,” said PHS volleyball coach Randi Bonander. “We really came together as a team to accomplish what we have been working on all season.”

Lander struggled in the second set, with four servers either serving into the net or out of bounds. With the score at 24-14, PHS senior Mallory Triplett spiked the ball for the win.

The Lady Panthers took the third set, 25-17.

“The non-starters and JV girls have really been pushing the varsity girls during practice which leads to success on the court,” said coach Bonander.

Aubrie Stenerson had eight kills, 46 set assists and four digs for the night. Rachel Bonander added eight kills and three blocks. Mariah Phister had five kills, two set assists and a serving percentage of 100. Jordan Walsh had 33 set assists, one dig, one ace serve and a serving percentage of 100. Tayli Stenerson had six digs, three set assists and one kill. Triplett had three kills and seven set assists.

“Friday night against Buffalo, we just came out flat,” said coach Bonander. “Buffalo is a good team, but at times we showed that we could stop them. We just couldn’t keep the momentum going for a whole game.”

Powell lost 17-25, 23-25, and 15-25.

Rachel Bonander had eight kills and five blocks. Sisters Aubrie and Tayli Stenerson both served one ace and had three digs. Aubrie Stenerson also had six kills while Sweet had five.

The team’s record now stands at 10-13 overall and 1-3 in Class 3A West’s north quadrant.

Today (Thursday), Powell will take on Riverton during the annual Pink Out Night. The game starts at 6 p.m.

On Saturday, Powell and Cody will face off at 5 p.m. Both contests are at home.
