Throughout the course of the season, the PHS boys swim team had 17 swimmers qualify for state with five swimmers earning All-Conference honors and seven earning All-State. Year-end awards for most valuable, most inspirational, hardest worker, most improved overall — as well as most improved for each class — were handed out on March 16.

All-Conference and All-State Honors

Junior Kacey Creed made All-Conference in the 100-yard breaststroke, with a first place finish in 1:04.37, and with a second place finish in the 100-yard butterfly, with a time of 57.63. Creed also earned All-State honors in the 100-yard butterfly, taking second place finish with a time 55.14 and taking the second place slot on the Powell High School Hall of Fame board.

Also this season, Creed swam to the first place slot on the Hall of Fame board in the breaststroke, with a time of 1:01.76.

Creed, Garret Henderson, Joe Rogers and Richard Span all earned All-State in the 400 yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:33.75.

Spann earned All-Conference and All-State in the 200 yard IM with a second place finish. At conference Spann swam a 2:16.96 and at state improved to a time of 2:08.90.

In the backstroke, Spann swam to a third place slot onto the Hall of Fame board with time of 56.70.

In diving, Hudson Wilkerson and Nate MaGill both earned All-Conference honors placing first and second respectively. Wilkerson also earned All-State with a second place finish and dove onto the Hall of Fame board in both 11- and six-dive competitions, while MaGill also earned spots on the board in 11 dives.

Spann, Creed, Henderson and Joe Kuntz all earned All-State Honorable Mention in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:47.32 for a fourth place finish.

To earn All-Conference and All-State, swimmers have to place in the top two in individual events or place first in a relay.

Year End Awards

On Thursday March 16, the PHS swim team handed out year end awards for the most valuable, most inspirational, most improved, hardest worker and the most improved swimmer in each class.

Most valuable and hardest worker was awarded to Creed.

The most valuable award goes the swimmer with the highest points from the season, and the hardest worker award is decided on by the coaches, aided by a list of nominees from the swimmers.

Head coach Stephanie Warren said to qualify as the hardest worker, swimmers must work hard at practice — and not miss a practice if at all possible — be a responsible leader and work hard overall.

All of the other awards are voted on by the members of the swim team.

Austen Layton was voted as being the most inspirational on the team and the most improved senior. Layton was also awarded the sportsmanship award at the Lander Invite on Jan. 30.

Junior Dillinger Wilkerson was awarded most improved, and Hudson Wilkerson was voted as most improved junior.

Most improved sophomore went to Rogers, and most improved freshman was Ben Cannizzaro.

The PHS boys swim team completed the 2016-17 swim season with an overall dual record of 5-1. The team’s invite record includes placing first at the Cody Invite and second at the Powell Gene Dozah Invite, Worland Invite and the Lander Bruce Gresley Invite. At the Gillette Invite, Powell placed second among the 3A schools and 11th overall. At conference, the team swam to a second place finish and a third place finish at state.

The swim team is coached by Warren and Jerry Rodriguez.
