Powell qualifies seven for state in opening weekend

The Powell High School boys’ swimming and diving team started the 2018-19 season in fine fashion over the weekend, with strong showings in quad meets in Powell and at Cody.

The Panthers dominated their home quad Friday afternoon at the Powell Aquatic Center, scoring 339 points to finish in the top spot. Cody was second with 200, Worland finished third with 197 and Newcastle rounded out the four with 177 points. Team scores were not kept for Saturday’s quad meet in Cody featuring the same four teams.

“We had some really great swims,” said Powell head coach Stephanie Warren. “You never really know what to expect until after that first weekend, but overall, we had some great performances.”

Seven Panthers swam state-qualifying times over the course of the two meets, including three freshmen: Nate Johnston, Francis Rogers and Josh Wright. Johnston swam 4A qualifying times in the 100 breaststroke and the 200 individual medley; he also qualified in the 100 butterfly.

Rogers qualified in the 200 individual medley, while Wright qualified in the 100 backstroke. Although it’s not uncommon for freshmen to swim state qualifying times, “they don’t always get there that first meet,” Warren said. “To have these three do it the first meet just kind of shows their dedication to swimming, and that they were training outside our season, as well.”

Several juniors also fared well, with Jay Cox, Richard Spann, Trenton Wilson and Bryce Hogan all punching their tickets to state.

Spann had the busiest weekend in terms of state times, qualifying in four events, including a 4A qualifying time in the 100 butterfly. He also qualified in the 200 and 100 freestyle and the 100 backstroke.

Cox qualified in the 100 backstroke in a time of 1:06.77, a marked improvement on his best time from last season.

“His [Cox] time in the backstroke was really good for him,” Warren said. “I think his fastest time last year was like a 1:09, so to swim a 1:06 off the start was great.”

Cox also qualified in the 100 breaststroke and the 50 freestyle.

Wilson finished first in the 500 freestyle Friday, with a state-qualifying time of 6:22.37.

“Trent [Wilson] has qualified for state multiple times, but never right at the beginning of the season,” Warren said. “It’s nice to have that out of the way, so that he doesn’t have to stress about that.”

Hogan won the diving event in both quads, posting state-qualifying scores of 164.90 Friday and 167.50 Saturday.

“[Hogan’s] scores were not far off from his PR last year, so I foresee him getting that without a problem,” Warren said.

Powell had multiple swimmers within a couple of seconds of state qualifying times in different events, and the relay teams shined as well. The 200 medley relay team of Cox, Johnston, Spann and Mathew Hobbs finished first Friday with a time of 1:56.31. Saturday’s team of Spann, Cox, Johnston and Joe Rogers also finished first in a time of 1:59.26.

Friday’s 200 freestyle medley relay team of Joe Rogers, Johnston, Wilson and Francis Rogers finished first with a time of 1:52.13. The same team shaved almost two seconds off their time the following day, posting a 1:50.86.

The Panthers’ 400 freestyle relay team of Spann, Wilson, Joe Rogers and Cox placed second Friday with a time of 4:04.10. The team of Wilson, Hobbs, Cox and Spann finished first Saturday with a time of 4:11.10.

“For right now, we’re hoping to have 12 swimmers go to state, similar to last year,” Warren said. “We’ll keep going and see what happens this season, but it looks pretty promising from what we’ve seen so far.”

The Panthers travel south this weekend for the Riverton Invitational. Warren said the team will work on a few minor things in practice this week, but expects the swimmers to be ready to go this weekend.

“We’ll work on things like our starts and our finishes — all of the little things that get perfected over time,” she said. “But we foresee some great performances coming from them. This week will be a full week of morning and afternoon practices, so we’ll have plenty of time to get ready for Saturday in Riverton.”
