The Lady Trapper basketball team rebounded from a Thursday loss to pick up a pair of wins on Friday and Saturday.

Playing at Western Nebraska Community College in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, on Thursday, the Northwest College women suffered a 93-59 loss. However, they fought back at the Gillette College Tournament to pummel Yellowstone Christian College 66-27 on Friday and take down Fort Carson 73-62 on Saturday.

Western Nebraska is one of the top teams in the region and NWC head coach Janis Beal felt it was good for the Lady Trappers to see them early in the season — and to see what it takes to be a top team in the region.

“Western Nebraska is a very good team,” Beal said. “Give credit to them, they are a great team. They were what we expected, but we just didn’t compete.”

“Hopefully we learned from it,” Beal said of the 93-59 loss.

NWC shot 66.7 percent on free throws, 29.4 percent on 3-point shots and 35.8 percent from the field, compared to Western Nebraska's 64 percent on free throws, 46.7 percent on 3-point shots and 47.9 percent from the field.

Western Nebraska had only nine turnovers to NWC’s 19.

Kira Marlow led the Trappers with 22 points and was the only one to hit double digits.

Julynne Silva was high rebounder with seven, followed by Dani McManamen with five boards.

On Friday, NWC beat Yellowstone Christian 66-27.

“Very pleased with their effort following the game at Western Nebraska,” said Beal.

Yellowstone Christian didn’t score its first points until late in the first quarter. The Trappers led 31-11 at halftime.

“(I) thought the girls really came out strong in the first half,” Beal said.

From the free throw line, NWC shot 61.5 percent, 35.3 percent from the 3-point line and 39.4 percent from the field.

Yellowstone Christian missed its five free throws while shooting 33.3 percent from the 3-point line and 26.1 percent from the field.

NWC had 13 turnovers while forcing Yellowstone Christian into 22 of them.

“Did a good job defensively, just getting after it,” said Beal.

Dallas Petties paced the Trappers with 11 points, followed by nine from Charri McArthur and eight apiece from Domenica Gomes and Silva

Petties and McManamen tied with the most rebounds with eight.

Gomes and and Marlow each had three steals and Lauren Hinckley led in assists with four.

On Saturday, the Lady Trappers got a tougher test from Fort Carson.

“We knew going into it that, they were going to be a good team,” said Beal, who watched them play against Gillette the night before.

Fort Carson led by as much as a dozen points in the first half, but “the girls did a good job of battling back, not caving at that point,” Beal said.

By halftime, the Lady Trappers were only down by two, trailing 35-33.

In the third quarter, the Lady Trappers came out and grabbed the lead, starting a back-and-forth battle that ended with NWC on top.

The Trappers shot 67.7 percent from the free throw line, 53.3 percent from the 3-point line and 48.9 percent from the field.

“We didn’t shoot a great percentage free throw-wise for the whole game,” said Beal. “But the last minute, when it counted, we did a really good job.”

McManamen went 10-for-11 from the free throw line and Gomes sank 5 of 6 attempts.

High scorers were McManamen with 18, Jessie Lessard with 17, Gomes with 11 and Marlow with 10.

Gomes had four assists while McManamen and Marlow each had three.

Fort Carson shot 58.3 percent from the free throw line, 34.8 percent from the 3-point line and 35.1 percent from the field.

Both teams had 14 turnovers.

Over the three games, Beal was impressed with how her squad cut down on the number of turnovers — dropping from the high 20s and 30s to 19, 12, and 14 over the weekend..

“We are taking care of the ball a lot better,” Beal said.

The women played Dawson Community College in Glendive, Montana, on Tuesday evening and were set to have a rematch with Yellowstone Christian College in Billings on Wednesday.

The women’s basketball team returns home on Saturday against Basketball Elite at 2 p.m. It will be the last game before the Christmas break.
