Saturday saw quite the splishing and splashing at the Park County Fairgrounds as the Mudfest races made for quite a show.
“Overall it was a great event. It ended up being a “north vs south” battle with the guys from Casper area going head to head with the guys from Billings area, all meeting up in the middle right here in Powell,” event organizer Brock Ninker said. “The crowd wasn’t huge but they were active and cheered on the competitors from far and wide as well as the home town boys.”
The Mud Drags had trucks from typical, every day drivers to trucks with nearly 1,000 horsepower going at it.
“The stands rumbled with the sound of the screaming motors, some so loud you could feel the pounding in your chest,” Ninker said. “In the air was the smell of high octane race gas and alcohol being burned at up to 9,000 rpms.”
Then came the Mud Bog competition, where drivers tried to make it through a massive, man-made, water-filled bog.
“The bog proved to be a monster – built by Ty Henderson – with only one truck making it through,” Ninker said. “We even had to resort to using Mr. Henderson’s excavator to pull the stuck rigs out as the Massey Ferguson 1100 diesel tractor was just not able to gain enough traction to get the job done.”
