Boys, girls show strong in Cody

Boasting a roster loaded with roughly 90 athletes, the Powell High School track team kicked off its spring season Saturday with a pair of strong finishes.

The Panther boys took second while the girls tied for third at the Yellowstone Sports Medicine Invitational in Cody.

“The kids did great; they competed well,” said PHS head coach Scott Smith. “We had a lot of kids come close to pre-qualifying; we had a lot of kids that may not have placed, but they show that they’ve got the potential that, as they learn to do it, they’re really going to help us out down at the end of the year.”

As a team, the Panther boys track team amassed 102 points, just behind Sheridan’s 104. Cody placed third with 92 points.

On the girls side, Sheridan also claimed first place, with 164 points, followed by Buffalo with 117 points. Next came the Powell and Riverton girls, who each totaled 68 points.

Individually, five Powell athletes qualified for state across three events.

Colby Warner prequalified in the high jump with his 6-foot leap and third place finish.

Paige Gann finished third in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 41.34 seconds, which also prequalified him for state.

The boys 4x100 meter relay team — made up of AJ Lewis, Mason Olsen, Paige Gann and TJ Abraham — finished first with a time of 44.94 seconds. That time prequalified them for state.

Meanwhile, on the girls team, JuliaKay O’Neill finished first in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:02.51. That was just short of qualifying for state.

Last year, the PHS track team had about 60 athletes — a typical number — and 20 of them graduated. But this year, the team has about 90 students participating.

“It’s not like we have 30 [additional] kids that don’t want to be here; we have 30 kids that want to be here, so everybody is working hard,” said Smith. “It’s just a lot of fun to be around them.”

Having 90 kids on the team presents problems — such as making sure there are enough uniforms and having many students for the coaches to keep track of — but coach Smith said it’s a great problem to have.

On Saturday, a schedule change will have the PHS track team traveling to Cody instead of Buffalo for a dual.

It will be a unique double-header, with both the high school and the middle school track teams competing.

Coach Smith said it will be nice, because the high school coaches will be able to see the middle school kids and work with them a little, and, in turn, the middle school athletes will be able to see what the next level is like.

The duals will start at 9 a.m. in Cody.
