Liz Cheney and Equality Day

Dear Editor:

In Wyoming we celebrate Equality Day not Martin Luther King Day. This supports the claim cowboys are bigoted. I know the troll who vandalized my property because my wife chose to fly a “Black Lives Matter” flag was a bigot.

Whatever, Equality Day in Wyoming is not about black or white. It has to do with a more basic division: that of men and women. When you are physically weaker; as a woman is to a man, as slaves are to their masters, you become subject to the man or group having the greater strength. When you are weaker than your oppressor, you become subservient to them or risk perishing.

Thank God almighty here in Wyoming it is women who are empowered. Women prove they are the equal of men every day. Women voted here first because they fought for it.

Too few of us here in Wyoming understand the threat our republic faced when President Trump called for insurrection inciting a well-organized, armed mob to storm the Capitol of the United States. One can only imagine the turmoil Liz Cheney experienced as she wrestled with the desire to support her party versus weighing the facts and evidence compelling her to stand alone condemning the actions of our president. There is no question the course she took to impeach Donald Trump has not been popular with her GOP constituency.

Liz Cheney, I am grateful you represent me. I regret the GOP is divided. If you run again, you face long odds. Those who choose to downplay or ignore recent events are numerous. Nevertheless, history will celebrate you for standing up for all of us with the intent of saying no more, no more lies, no more destruction to our democracy.

“There has never been a greater betrayal by a president of the United States of his office and his oath to the Constitution …”

One vote by one woman from the Equality State will always be remembered as courageous. Liz Cheney, thank you for your service. Perhaps one day your service will be considered unequaled.

With sincere respect,

David Hoffman
