Lady Trappers win two more

Posted

The Northwest College women’s basketball team came out ready to play basketball last week, using fast starts to beat both Little Big Horn College (87-48) and Miles Community College (76-49). The wins brought NWC’s overall season record to 11-9.

On Wednesday, Jan. 18, the Lady Trappers traveled to Little Big Horn College in Crow Agency, Montana, and jumped out to a 52-20 lead at halftime.

“Girls came out really strong at the beginning,” said head coach Janis Beal.

Freshman Kira Marlow of Shelley, Idaho, paced the team with 25 points.

It was a similar story for NWC on Saturday, when they hosted Miles Community College.

“I just felt like our girls came ready to play, I mean from the get go,” Beal said.

After being down 17-12 in the first quarter, the Lady Trappers came back to outscore the Pioneers 35-2 in the second quarter. That gave NWC a 47-19 advantage going into halftime.

Beal said a couple of things led to the scoring success in the second period — including taking care of the ball (the team had just three turnovers in the first half) and playing good defense, forcing turnovers that led to steals and easy buckets for the Lady Trappers.

Northwest ended up with only eight turnovers to Miles City’s 22.

“It was a fun game; the thing was it was everybody,” Beal said.

Ten of NWC’s 12 players put points on the board, with Marlow and Charri McArthur leading with 15 points each. Mattie Creager also hit double digits, scoring 10. Marlow, McArthur and Jessie Lessard each had three 3-pointers.

“It’s good to see that consistency from (Marlow),” Beal said. The coach said Marlow is getting back to playing at the level she was before the Christmas break.

Seven Lady Trappers collected at least one steal for a total of 10; Marlow led with three.

For Beal, baskets and steals were not the only highlight, noting the team’s 20 assists from 10 different players.

“So it was them getting their teammates the ball in a scoring position instead of trying to do it on their own,” said Beal “Any time you can have a 20 assist to eight turnover ratio, you’re doing some good things. Very pleased with how they passed the ball.”

Marlow led with four assists, while Domenica Gomes, Lauren Hinckley and Petties had three each and Jessie Lessard two.

Overall, Northwest shot 46.3 percent from the field — including making 57.1 percent of their 3-point shots — while sinking just 2 of 5 free throws (40 percent). Miles City shot 31 percent from the field and 66.7 percent on free throws.

“Hopefully we can use the momentum from these two games going into our games this week,” said Beal “You know it’s something we got to prove — is that we can win on the road instead of just play well at home, hopefully we can use the momentum and continue forward.”

The momentum going into the games this week, particularly the game against Miles City, was due in part to the team’s “great” preparation, Beal said.

“Our practices leading up to it, were more intense and were just more ‘get after it’-type practices,” the coach said, adding, “Hopefully they see the correlation between how you practice is how you play.”

Next up for the Trappers are back-to-back away games.

Today (Thursday) Northwest will play in Rock Springs against Western Wyoming and on Friday, they’ll face Central Wyoming.
