PHS basketball teams open state tourney with wins

Both the Panthers and Lady Panthers opened the Class 3A state basketball tournament with victories on Thursday.

The Powell High School girls hung on to beat Rawlins Thursday morning, 51-50, while the boys dismantled Torrington 68-39 in the early afternoon.

Panthers 68, Torrington 39

If PHS sophomores Mason Marchant and Landon Lengfelder were nervous heading into their first-ever 3A State Basketball Tournament, it certainly didn’t show once they hit the floor. The duo combined for 28 points, as the Panthers advanced to Friday’s semifinals.

Marchant’s 15 points led the team, followed by senior Will Preator with 14 and Lengfelder with 13. Preator and Lengfelder sank three 3-pointers each, while Jesse Brown hit two from behind the arc. Dalton Woodward had a team-high 10 rebounds to go along with his five points; the senior also led the team in assists with three.

The Panthers will face Buffalo, the No. 1 seed from the east, at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Casper College.

Lady Panthers 51, Rawlins 50

Led by a double-double from Rachel Bonander (19 points, 15 rebounds) and 17 points from Aubrie Stenerson, the Powell High School girls' basketball team outlasted the Rawlins Lady Outlaws 51-50 in opening-round action of the 3A State Basketball Tournament. The Lady Panthers built up a 10 point, 47-37 lead, then held on for the win.

The Powell girls will play Lyman at 4:30 p.m. Friday in the semi-finals at Casper College. The Lady Panthers will be looking to avenge last weekend's 54-33 loss to the Lady Eagles at the regional tournament.
