John Edward Luper

(Sept. 10, 1940 - Jan. 30, 2017)

John Edward Luper, 76 of Cody, died Jan. 30, 2017, after a long-fought battle with cancer. John was born Sept. 10, 1940, to Della Skiles and Robert Luper in Auburn, California.

He grew up hunting and roaming the hills of Northern California. John had many stories of his childhood excursions. His life was changed at an early age from polio, but he never let this slow him down.

John went through school in California and after graduating from high school he went to work for the U.S. Postal Service in 1958.

He always dreamed of the wide-open spaces and mountains of Wyoming, and after a family vacation he made the decision to move to Wyoming. He moved to Cody in 1968.

He continued working for the Postal Service, retiring after 34 years in 1992. After retirement John and his wife, Joanna, had the time of their lives. John was an avid outdoorsman. He and Joanna enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending the summer camping in the Big Horn Mountains and Sunlight Basin.

John was an excellent shot with any gun, avid firewood cutter, best camp cook and was proud to have no card etiquette playing pinochle.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson and two sons-in-law.

John is survived by his wife Joanna Luper; brother Bob Skiles (Michelle); sister Sonya Gribble (Kevin); son Mike Luper (Dani); daughter Angela Hilliard (Greg); stepdaughters Vena McBeth (Bob), Kathy Stahl, Mary Pickens (Don); stepson Chris Scharen (Barb); 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Ballard Funeral Home has handled the cremation services. Per John’s request, there will be no memorial service.

Memorial donations may be made to Cody Senior Center.
