Herbert “Herb” H. Dooley, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away Monday, July 2, 2018, at Huron Regional Medical Center at the age of 85. A private family burial with military honors by the Huron Veteran’s Council was at the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery on Thursday, July 5, 2018.

Herb was born Dec. 4, 1932, to Dewey and Elizabeth (Scheele) Dooley of Carpenter, South Dakota. He enlisted and served in the United States Army from 1951-54, including one tour in Korea. He was united in marriage Jan. 4, 1952, to Vivadel Beck in Huron, South Dakota. A man of strong faith, he was very proud of his time spent ministering to the inmates at Telford Unit, a maximum-security state prison in New Boston, Texas, as well as serving as a Troubled Youth Specialist in Wyoming.

Although he had multiple occupations throughout his working years, Herb was most passionate about raising sheep. He joyfully resumed this vocation in his 70s until his health prevented him from continuing.

He was preceded in death by his parents Dewey and Elizabeth; one sister Delores Spanbauer; and four brothers Freeman, LaVern, Kenneth and Dale.

Herb is survived by his wife of 66 years, Vi; two sisters, Shirley Schied of Huron, South Dakota and Marie Barnes of Tempe, Arizona; three sons; Jerry (Penny) Dooley of Huron, South Dakota; Vern (Kay) Dooley of Powell and Scott (Deb) Dooley of Boulder, Colorado; one daughter, Patricia (Duke) Westerberg of Philip, South Dakota; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Welter Funeral Home of Huron, South Dakota, was in charge of arrangements.
