Grizzly relocated to spot east of Yellowstone

A grizzly bear was relocated to a spot just east of Yellowstone National Park last week, after it killed cattle in the Pinedale area.

The sub-adult female was captured and transported to the Mormon Creek drainage on Thursday by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, at the direction of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The spot was about 5 miles east of Yellowstone, inside the Shoshone National Forest.

The bear had been caught killing cows on a U.S. Forest Service grazing allotment north of Pinedale, the Game and Fish said in a news release.

“This particular site was chosen due to the lack of human presence in the area,” the Game and Fish said. “Consultation with the appropriate personnel and agencies occurs to minimize the chance of future conflicts and maximize the survival potential of the relocated grizzly bear”

It added that bears deemed to be an immediate threat to human safety are not released back into the wild.
