Gines to compete in Junior National Finals Rodeo

Posted

For 13-year-old Powell native Caden Gines, a lengthy season of bull riding will pay off with an appearance at next week’s Junior National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas.

Gines — the son of Codi and Colby Gines — has been riding bulls since he was 9.

Gines qualified for the first ever Junior National Finals Rodeo by placing at the Northwest Miniature Bull Riding Finals in Helena, Montana, Nov. 3-5. The top 10 riders from five different states were invited to compete at the regional event. That made for a total of 50 competitors, all between the ages of 9 and 14.

To get his invite to the Northwest Miniature Bull Riding Finals, Gines had to qualify, competing in sanctioned miniature bull riding events throughout the state of Wyoming and a few in Montana.

“This year I got on 75 head of bucking bulls,” Gines said proudly.

The Junior National Finals Rodeo starts Monday and continues through Wednesday, running in conjunction with the National Finals Rodeo that starts today (Thursday) and concludes Thursday, Dec. 10.

Competitors in the junior rodeo will be divided into three age classes; Gines will compete in the 12-14 group.

Riders must weigh no more than 125 pounds to get on the miniature bulls.

Beyond bull riding, Gines also competed in breakaway roping and team roping this year. Adding to the Gines family rodeo tradition, his younger brother, 9-year-old Casen, started his first year of competition in miniature bareback riding.
