Former NWC standout makes Nov. 7 Sports Illustrated cover

Trapper basketball fans may have noticed a familiar face peering back at them from magazine racks across the country this month.

Former Northwest College standout Chris Boucher made the cover of the Nov. 7 issue of Sports Illustrated, accompanied with an eight-page feature article detailing his life’s journey up to now playing for University of Oregon Ducks.

The piece is titled, “Slim’s Chance: Chris Boucher took an unusual route to D-I but makes the Ducks a serious title contender.”

Boucher transferred after his freshman year at New Mexico Junior College in Hobbs to play for the Trappers during the 2014-15 season. The 6 foot, 10 inch, forward-center hybrid helped lead NWC to the Region IX championship that season while being named the NJCAA Division I player of the year.

“What a great honor for him,” Brian Erickson, NWC men’s head basketball coach, said of the Sports Illustrated article. “Really proud of him, of everything he’s accomplished at this point and (I) know he’s got so much more ahead of him.”

It’s not the first time that Boucher has made the national spotlight: in February, USA Today wrote a lengthy feature about the Canadian.

In addition to being available online and for sale, a copy of the recent issue of Sports Illustrated can be found at the Powell Branch Library.
