Community Thanksgiving Dinner served at the Fairgrounds Thursday

A feast for 500 will be served at the annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner in Powell this week.

Everyone is welcome to join the free meal, which takes place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Thursday at the Park County Fairgrounds. The community-wide event has been a Thanksgiving tradition in Powell since starting in 1999.

“I think the reason that it has lasted so many years, is that everyone is treated like family,” said Amy McLain with New Life Church, who is helping organize this year’s meal. “Sometimes people come because their family is far away, or sometimes it’s just to enjoy the company of others. No matter why you come, you can be sure that there will be lots of food, conversation and you may even leave with newfound friends.”

A full traditional Thanksgiving dinner will be served, complete with lots of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green beans, salads, relish trays, bread and many different pies to choose from, McLain said.

“You will not leave hungry!” she said.

The meal is open to longtime regulars and newcomers alike.

“If this is your first year attending the Community Thanksgiving Dinner, we want you to know we are so excited to have you attend,” McLain said. “We hope that you feel welcome and enjoy fellowship with others in our community. There is a lot of laughter and conversation to be had, and we hope it feels like family.”

For those in need of a ride, volunteers will pick people up and bring them to the fairgrounds on Thursday. Take-out meals also will be delivered to homebound residents. To arrange a ride or meal delivery, call New Life Church at 754-0424 by Wednesday at noon.

“We will not be at the church to answer phones on Thanksgiving Day, so please make sure to call ahead of time,” McLain said.

Just over 500 meals were served in 2017, and “we hope to serve just as many this year,” she said.

Local churches partner to make the annual dinner possible.

“The other great thing about this event is that many people come not only to be served, but to serve,” McLain said. “It’s a great way to give back to our community.”

If you want to help, there’s still time to sign up — just call New Life (754-0424). Volunteers will be setting up for the dinner on Wednesday, then serving and cleaning up on Thursday.

“We would love for people to volunteer!” McLain said. “There is a lot that goes in to putting on a meal like this, and lots of hands make light work.”

As always, Thursday’s meal will be served free of charge.

“We want to be sure people know that they do not have to contribute financially to the meal,” she said. “However, donations are accepted. Donations will be given to the Council of Community Services, which supports those in financial hardship in our community.”
