Bill R. Dawson, 76, of Cody, died surrounded by his loving family on Dec. 17, 2016, after a short battle with cancer.

Bill was born in Bentonville, Arkansas, on March 23, 1940, to Cleve and Estel Dawson. Bill first came to Wyoming in 1958 when he worked on a wheat harvest crew and met his bride-to-be. He returned in 1960 working at Old Faithful Lodge in Yellowstone Park, where he developed his love of the mountains and horses.

He returned to Wyoming permanently when he married Judy Bomhoff on May 27, 1961, and worked on several ranches around Egbert and Wheatland.

Bill worked for the Wyoming Department of Transportation in Wheatland and transferred to Cody in 1977. He retired in 2002 after 30 years of maintaining highways and plowing snow.

After retirement, Bill worked his small ranch, raising hay and his livestock. It was not uncommon to see Bill and his horse “Rosie” and buggy along the Greybull highway, giving rides to anyone that asked. Bill loved woodworking, building many pieces of furniture and repairing and restoring furniture.

Bill was active at First Baptist Church in Cody, where he demonstrated a love of God and family. He loved his grandchildren deeply and never missed an opportunity to spend time with them.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Bill is survived by Judy, his loving wife of 55 years; sister Arlene Jackson (Edmond); brothers Jarvis (Bobbie) and Virgil (Faye), son Clint (Kim); daughter Sheri and six grandchildren: Matthew, Jonathan, Steven, Tyrell, Megan, and Abi.

Bill always had a smile on his face and loved life.

He was dearly loved by many and will be sorely missed by his family, neighbors and friends.

Funeral services were Wednesday, Dec. 21, at First Baptist Church in Cody.

Memorials may be made in Bill’s name to Spirit Mountain Hospice, 808 Canyon View Ave, Cody, WY.
