After ‘a lot of growth,’ PHS volleyball season ends

Posted

At last weekend’s Class 3A West Volleyball Tournament in Pinedale, Powell came up short of advancing to the state tournament, losing to Mountain View and Pinedale.

On Friday afternoon, the Lady Panthers suffered a 3-0 loss to Mountain View to start off the regional tournament. The Powell High School squad made each set closer than the last, falling 25-15, 25-18 and 25-22.

“We had a lot of growth this year,” said head coach Randi Bonander.

Rachel Bonander led PHS with 10 kills, while Hartly Thorington had five and Allie Sommerville and Mallory Triplett each had four. Brooke Sweet had three kills and Mariah Phister and Dani Asay had one apiece.

The Stenerson sisters and Sweet scored the team’s four ace serves; Aubrie Stenerson led with two while Tayli Stenerson and Sweet each had one.

Rachel Bonander had PHS’ only blocks, with two.

Aubrie Stenerson led the team in digs with three. Sommerville, Asay, Thorington, Jordan Walsh, and Tayli Stenerson each had one.

With the loss to Mountain View, Powell had to play Pinedale on Saturday morning for a loser out game. Pinedale had lost to Riverton on Friday.

The first set went to Pinedale, 25-19. Powell came back in the second set to win by that same 25-19 margin. In the third set, Powell was edged out of the win with a score 26-28. Pinedale won the fourth and final set of the match 25-22, putting Powell out of the regional tournament and ending their hopes of reaching state.

PHS’ four ace serves were evenly split between Sommerville, Aubrie Stenerson, Phister and Tayli Stenerson.

Rachel Bonander led the team in kills with 17. Jazlyn Haney was the next spiker with six kills, followed by four for Thorington and Phister, two for Aubrie Stenerson and one for Sweet.

In digs, Tayli Stenerson led with seven while Aubrie Stenerson had five. Rachel Bonander, Sommerville and Asay each had two. Phister, Triplett, Thorington and Walsh each had one to make up the 22 digs for the Powell team.

This year was Randi Bonander’s first season as head coach.

“I knew it would be a tough road with myself and the other coaches working together for the first time and with the turnover in the past couple of years,” said Randi Bonander. “But the ladies worked hard all year and should hold their heads high because one weekend doesn’t define them as athletes or people.”
