Thumbs up and a pat on the back to the Park County Search and Rescue Unit for its courage and willingness to endure extreme conditions, all in the name of trying to help others.

Search and Rescue deserves our praise and appreciation all year, but its efforts in recent days, as it looked for a plane that disappeared last week, merit special attention.

Donald Rumsfeld isn’t known as a buddy-buddy, friendly kind of guy.

Rumsfeld, the controversial two-time Defense secretary, has a reputation as a prickly, commanding figure, someone that even friends and allies like Dick Cheney and George W. Bush found difficult to be around.

It was a cold, rainy day — a perfect Saturday to curl up on the couch with a book or a movie and a bowl of popcorn.

So what were all those people doing at the Park County Annex?

The city of Powell’s 2014-15 budget process is nearing its conclusion.

The Powell City Council held a pair of budget hearings last week as the $18.2 million document nears official approval. The council must vote three times on it; the first such vote is scheduled for Monday night. The budget for 2013-14 was $17.4 million.

As organization marks 95th year, it seeks to help more former service members

Spirited discussion over Billings’ landfill agreement  

An item that wasn’t on the agenda sparked the most heated discussion at Monday night’s Powell City Council meeting.

The council approved contracts to haul household waste to a Billings, Mont., landfill and to buy a second trailer to do that.

Thumbs up to mothers.

Sunday is Mother’s Day, an annual holiday to honor the women who give birth and provide love and care for all of us. We’re sure there will be breakfasts and brunches, flowers and candy, cards and kisses for the moms.

New executive director Simonton has Park County roots  

Wyoming Association of Municipalities Executive Director Shelley Simonton has 99 bosses but she has no problem with that.

Simonton guides WAM, an association that includes all 99 incorporated cities and towns in the state. It met in Powell Thursday through Saturday, hearing from four speakers on Thursday and holding a two-day strategic retreat on the final two days.

Thumbs down to confusion and inaction on the part of the Park County Fair Board.

It was tasked with raising $500,000 to help pay for a new multi-use building on the fairgrounds. So far, it has collected $1,750 and seems to have more questions than answers.
