On April 19, six weeks after his Powell Panthers narrowly missed out on hoisting a state championship trophy, Powell High School head basketball coach Mike Heny was informed he would not be returning to his position.

He could step down voluntarily, or be shown the door.

Karen Richmond wasn’t sure what to expect when her husband Kenneth left their Powell home the morning of May 1. But in their 32 years of marriage, she’s come to expect (if not fully accept) the unexpected.

Powell High School will debut its latest theater production, “Once Upon a Mattress” Friday at 7 p.m. in its auditorium.

The adaptation of the fairy tale “The Princess and the Pea” is a return to musical comedies after a brief departure into heavier fare. The high school’s previous show, “The Diviners,” was a more traditional character-driven drama.

Male lead Josiah Hogan said he expects this show to be more accessible than “Diviners” and better received by the community.

Decision makers got a glimpse into Powell Middle School’s future during Tuesday night’s Park County School District No. 1 board meeting.

Members of CTA Architects and Engineers took Powell board members and school administrators on a virtual tour of the design for phase two of Powell Middle School’s expansion and renovation.

A Make-A-Wish Foundation spaghetti dinner will be held in the school’s common area at 5:30 p.m., with a live auction to follow in the school’s gym at 7 p.m. All proceeds will go towards fulfilling the wish of an anonymous Powell child facing a life-threatening medical condition.

The resumption of Northwest College’s rodeo season and my close proximity to the self-proclaimed rodeo capital of the world got me thinking, humans rely an alarming amount on animals for entertainment.

PHS Robotics to compete in St. Louis

For the second year in a row, Panther Robotics will test their metal against the world’s best.

The Powell High School robotics team known as The Mad Hatters will travel to St. Louis, Mo., to compete at the 2013 FTC World Championships April 24-27. Powell’s team will be one of only 128 teams from around the world to attend the competition, putting The Mad Hatters in the top 2.5 percent of all competitive FTC robotics teams.

Jean Hubbard, a guidance counselor at Powell Middle School, would receive emails from Christy Davis every Monday morning.

Despite Davis’ circumstances (she was undergoing chemotherapy following a diagnosis of ovarian cancer), her emails to her best friend always focused on the positive.

Before I lived in Park County I was unfamiliar with the acronym RiNO (Republican in Name Only), which I’ve since gathered is used by some as a synonym for the acronym POS.
