For the second time in a week the Powell Pioneers were involved in a no-hitter, though Saturday found the home team on the wrong end of a punchless offensive performance.

Cole Torgensen of the Billings Halos threw seven innings of no-hit ball, including 12 strikeouts and no walks in a 3-0 game 1 win, and the Pioneers had only three hits (two singles and a double) in a 6-2 loss in game 2.

More than 90 athletes competed in Powell’s Dano‘lope’ Dash May 31 and a small contingent of Powellites traveled across the Big Horns for the 31st annual Buffalo Triathlon Saturday.

Cory Heny was perfect and the lineup was better than good as the Powell Pioneers swept the Lovell Mustangs in a conference doubleheader Tuesday evening in Powell.

Heny struck out 11 of the 15 batters he faced and needed only 62 pitches (49 for strikes) to get through the Mustang lineup one and two-thirds times. Then the Powell offense ended Game 1 early by going up big in a 12-0 win.

The Powell Pioneers scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to notch a come-from-behind 10-9 win, their first of the season, against the Billings Halos Saturday afternoon in Powell.

And they did it without an RBI hit.

Panthers win 8 titles, Lynch breaks 3A shot put record

The Powell Panther boys won their second state track and field title in four years and the girls took second at the Class 3A State Championship Meet in Casper over the weekend.

Five Panthers took home seven individual titles, and the girls’ 4x100-meter relay team won an eighth as the PHS boys scored 118 points and the girls scored 111.

Ouellette, Katz named to Class 3A All-State team

The Powell High School boys’ soccer team finished fourth at the Class 3A state tournament to place higher than any soccer team in PHS history.

PHS head coach Travis Rapp downplayed the accomplishment, which he said is a good sign for Powell soccer.

The PHS girls’ soccer team again extended its season in improbable fashion but ultimately was eliminated in two games at the Class 3A state tournament in Jackson over the weekend.

The Panthers (7-12, 2-2 Northwest) lost 3-0 to Buffalo in the first round Thursday and then 3-2 (5-4) in a consolation round game with Cody on Friday that was decided by a shootout.

It hasn’t worked out. Yet.

Brett Smith’s initial foray into the NFL has been a failure, but that doesn’t mean his decision to leave college a year early was wrong.

University of Wyoming fans were disappointed when the former Cowboys’ quarterback was overlooked during three days and seven rounds of the NFL draft, but were given reason to celebrate when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Smith as an undrafted free agent shortly after the final pick was made.

2011 PHS grad grateful for community’s support

Just five days after former Powell High School track star Kyle Sullivan won the Mountain West Conference’s decathlon title, he had one thing on his mind.

“I just want to go out and do it again,” Sullivan said in an interview with the Tribune.
