Northwest advances to semifinals
The Northwest College women’s basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the Region IX tournament in Scottsbluff, Neb., on Tuesday afternoon with a stunning 64-59 upset of top-seeded Sheridan College. The Trappers also flexed their defensive might in the opening round with a 65-56 victory over Otero.

Trappers finish 15-15, draw Otero to open Region IX tournament
Northwest College’s sophomores went out in style, defeating Western Wyoming 90-80 in overtime in their final home contest of the 2012-2013 season. The team fell 65-52 at Gillette in its final regular-season contest to finish 8-8 overall in Region IX North play and 15-15 in the regular season.

PHS junior Zach Thompson captured the 195-pound state title by fall with 28 seconds left in his match against Star Valley’s Jordan Semadeni to clinch the 2013 Class 3A state championship for the Panthers. Thompson was one of two Panther champions crowned on the day.

Four named All-American
The Northwest College Trappers crowned four new All-Americans, including a national runner-up, and added to their string of consecutive top 10 national finishes at the NJCAA national wrestling championships in Des Moines, Iowa, over the weekend. The Trappers finished sixth as a team, marking the 19th consecutive year the team has finished among the top 10 programs nationally.

Seven competing for shot at national title
Hoping to avoid the travel drama that plagued the team’s journey to the 2012 national championships, head coach Jim Zeigler and the seven national tournament qualifiers from the third-ranked Northwest College wrestling team departed for Des Moines, Iowa, hoping to beat the arrival of a major winter storm expected to slam the nation’s heartland.

Sophomore Solarin nominated for national player of the week
The Northwest College Trappers received a pair of monstrous double-double performances from sophomore Jeffrey Solarin as they picked up wins over Casper and Miles Community College over the weekend. The Trappers improve to 19-9 overall and 8-6 in Region IX North play.
Fourth-ranked Panther girls roll
Powell rises to third in 3A West standings
The fourth-ranked Powell Panthers girls’ basketball team defeated Pinedale 50-27 and Lander 47-38 in weekend road basketball action. The victories improved the Panthers’ record to 14-5 overall this season and 8-5 in the league standings.
