High School football in Wyoming’s Class 3A has boiled down to one last game. No. 1 Powell and No. 2 Star Valley are set to collide once again, this time with the championship trophy on the line.

The seedings for the NJCAA men’s soccer national championship tournament were announced Tuesday and, as expected, the Trappers will have some work to do. Northwest opens tournament action at 3 p.m., Monday, against unbeaten Louisburg College out of North Carolina.

The fall sports calendar will finish playing out this week as the Powell High School football team and the Northwest College men’s soccer team both head to their respective championship events. Two teams could not have taken two more diverse roads to reach their destinations.

If there was one glaring question mark on the Powell Panthers’ 2012 football resume going into Friday night’s semifinals, it was how the team would respond if faced with adversity. After all, when your average victory margin during the year has been 38 points, there’s not much room for adversity.

The crazy postseason ride for the Northwest College men’s soccer team just keeps getting better and better. Once thought done for the year, the Trapper men upset third-ranked Yavapai 4-2 on Friday, then avenged a regional final loss to Western Wyoming by a 1-0 final on Saturday to win the district title.

The No. 20 Northwest College Trappers fell short of an opportunity to qualify for the national championships, dropping two of three games at the Region IX North tournament last week in Powell. The Trappers conclude their season at 21-11 overall.

After an agonizing 2-1 loss to Western Wyoming in the championship game on Sunday, Northwest College men’s soccer coach Rob Hill had already begun the adjustment to the off-season. He’d even scheduled a time for players to hand in their uniforms and gear.

The Powell Panthers host Green River for the second time in three weeks. Last time, the stake was the 3A West regular season conference title and home field advantage for the playoffs. This time around, the prize is even bigger — a trip to Laramie.

On a night where No. 1 Powell struggled to execute offensively for chunks of the game, the Panthers’ defensive unit came through in flying colors. Powell forced eight turnovers, including four intereceptions by senior Dewey Schwahn, and held Lander to just 46 yards of total offense to cruise 36-0 into the semifinal round of the Class 3A football playoffs.
