The Powell Panthers open competition in the final postseason events of the 2012-2013 school year as the Powell boys’ soccer team opens 3A quarterfinal play against third-ranked Lander in Jackson at 11 a.m. today (Thursday). A short while later, pole vaulters Matthew Widdicombe, Brendon Phister and Hayden Cragoe and high jumper Anissa Warner will get things started for the Panther track team in Casper.

Tuesday night, the Park County School District No. 1 board of trustees approved the recommendation of superintendent Kevin Mitchell to terminate the basketball coaching contract of Mike Heny. The move comes months after the Panthers made an appearance in the state championship game, after two of the three most prolific scorers in Panther basketball history had graduated under his tenure and after he built the program up from a 3-23 beginning.

Team rallies from two back to beat Douglas
The Powell Panthers battled back from a two-goal second-half deficit, then shrugged off a game-tying goal in the final seconds of regulation to prevail 5-4 in overtime over Douglas. The victory advances the Panthers to the quarterfinal round of this week’s state soccer championships in Jackson.

The Powell Panther girls’ soccer team took care of business on Saturday in Worland, posting a 4-0 shutout of Newcastle and earning a place in the state 3A quarterfinals on Thursday in Jackson. The Panthers will open against the state tournament hosts at 2 p.m.
