Late TD lifts PHs to repeat 3A title

Dewey Schwahn caught the game-winning touchdown with 5:35 to play on Friday. From there the defense of the No. 1 Powell Panthers did what it had done all season to wrap up a 13-10 state championship victory over No. 2 Star Valley in Laramie.

Nine NWC soccer players honored

Northwest College sophomore Samhia Simao was named the Region IX women’s soccer player of the year after shattering her own school record for goals scored in a single season. Simao was also one of five players named to either the women’s or men’s first team all-Region list.

No. 1 Powell meets No. 2 Star Valley again

High School football in Wyoming’s Class 3A has boiled down to one last game. No. 1 Powell and No. 2 Star Valley are set to collide once again, this time with the championship trophy on the line.

NWC, now ranked 18th, draws No. 3 Louisburg

The seedings for the NJCAA men’s soccer national championship tournament were announced Tuesday and, as expected, the Trappers will have some work to do. Northwest opens tournament action at 3 p.m., Monday, against unbeaten Louisburg College out of North Carolina.

The fall sports calendar will finish playing out this week as the Powell High School football team and the Northwest College men’s soccer team both head to their respective championship events. Two teams could not have taken two more diverse roads to reach their destinations.

Panthers fight past Green River to reach title game

If there was one glaring question mark on the Powell Panthers’ 2012 football resume going into Friday night’s semifinals, it was how the team would respond if faced with adversity. After all, when your average victory margin during the year has been 38 points, there’s not much room for adversity.

Trapper men’s soccer heading for nationals

The crazy postseason ride for the Northwest College men’s soccer team just keeps getting better and better. Once thought done for the year, the Trapper men upset third-ranked Yavapai 4-2 on Friday, then avenged a regional final loss to Western Wyoming by a 1-0 final on Saturday to win the district title.

Team finishes year 21-11

The No. 20 Northwest College Trappers fell short of an opportunity to qualify for the national championships, dropping two of three games at the Region IX North tournament last week in Powell. The Trappers conclude their season at 21-11 overall.

Season not over for Trapper men’s soccer

After an agonizing 2-1 loss to Western Wyoming in the championship game on Sunday, Northwest College men’s soccer coach Rob Hill had already begun the adjustment to the off-season. He’d even scheduled a time for players to hand in their uniforms and gear.

Semifinal contest determines who gets to state in Laramie

The Powell Panthers host Green River for the second time in three weeks. Last time, the stake was the 3A West regular season conference title and home field advantage for the playoffs. This time around, the prize is even bigger — a trip to Laramie.
