PHS awards night highlights many students

Seniors Kendra Ostrom and Josh Cragoe were named the senior athletes of the year at Powell High School on Monday night. The award annoucement was the highlight of the evening sponsored by the Powell Athletic Roundtable and the PHS Letter Club.

Nix’s ace highlights last spring meet

The Powell Panthers closed out the spring golf season with a championship finish at Cody’s Olive Glenn Country Club last Saturday. The Panthers carded a 319 team score, highlighted by Dillon Nix’s hole-in-one on the par-3 sixth hole.
The rarity helped propel Nix to his first career top-10 finish as a varsity team member.

3A West regional meet this week

The Powell Panthers finished preparations for this week’s 3A West regional meet with strong showings at the Cody Trackstravaganza last Friday. The Panther boys continued their streak of championship finishes with a 37-point win over Cody. The Panther girls placed second, just 14.5 points off Cody’s title pace.

Defeat Star Valley 2-1

The Powell Panthers wrapped up the regular season of boys’ soccer with a 2-1 victory at Star Valley and a 3-0 loss at Jackson over the weekend. The Panthers take an 8-7 record into a Saturday state tournament play-in game against Rawlins in Riverton.

Legion season gets started for Powell

The Powell Pioneers raised the curtain on the 2012 summer season over the weekend, splitting a home doubleheader against the Billings Halos on Saturday and a road twinbill at Livingston, Mont., on Sunday. Saturday’s games took place only after team officials pushed the time for first pitch back three hours after early morning rains in Powell.

NWC Team pads lead heading into season’s final rodeo

The Northwest College women’s rodeo team placed second over the weekend at the Dawson Community College rodeo, tightening their grip on second place and an automatic qualifying spot to the College National Finals Rodeo. In the process, they added more than 100 points onto their lead over the University of Montana, Western.

Pasos, Ryan honored with Trapper Awards

Leonardo Medeiros and Cheyenne Saltsman were named the athletes of the year for Northwest College on Monday night at the school’s annual athletic awards ceremony. The dinner and program was held at The Commons in downtown Powell.
Medeiros was an All-American and the Region IX MVP last fall for the Trapper men’s soccer program. He led the Trappers in goals scored this season while helping lead head coach Rob Hill’s team to a Region IX championship and a trip to the NJCAA District tournament in Arizona.

Cragoe, Lynch each take second for Panthers

The Powell Panthers were shut out of the win column, but still managed to post a number of impressive showings at the Wyoming Track Classic on Monday. The event in Casper had been scheduled for last Saturday before inclement weather forced organizers to issue a delay.

Injuries abound as Panthers salvage split


The fourth-ranked Panther boys’ soccer team split a pair of games over the weekend, falling 5-2 at Lander on Friday before recovering with a 1-0 victory in Pinedale on Saturday. The impact of the games might extend far beyond the win-loss column or this week’s rankings update though.

Home opener scheduled for Saturday

The Powell Pioneers struck out on their attempt to start the 2012 Legion baseball season. A scheduled Sunday doubleheader in Billings was rained out, forcing the team to wait at least another week to begin the new season.
The season opener could now come on Saturday, when the Pioneers are scheduled to host the Billings Halos at 11 a.m., before facing off against the Casper Oilers at 4 p.m. The Halos and Oilers will play each other in a 1:30 p.m. game.
