Time to climb again

Defense of 3A state title begins for PHS Football

The problem with reaching the top of any hill is that, sooner or later, you have to come down and begin the climb all over again. Such is the situation with the 2012 edition of Powell High School football.

Down 2-0 at half, No. 18 Northwest forces 3-3 tie

Trailing 2-0 at intermission in an exhibition game against a Rocky Mountain College team that had pounded them 4-1 just 48 hours earlier, it would have been understandable had the 18th-ranked Northwest College men’s soccer team opted to pack it in a little early on Monday night in Cody.

Trapper women fall to Rocky

NWC comes up short in exhibition

Rocky Mountain College defeated Northwest College by a 4-0 count on Monday in exhibition soccer action in Cody. It was the first-ever appearance in Cody by the Trapper women’s team, which has featured a number of Cody players in its brief history.

For women’s coach Kaylin Olivas it was a largely wasted opportunity for her side to showcase itself to the local fan base.

The Sports Guy: What season is it?

The red car slowed as it drove down the nearby street. From within, a lone male voice unleashed a joyful cry, “it’s football season!”

Indeed it is. Under normal circumstances, I probably would have returned the battle cry with equally passionate enthusiasm.

Panthers return to practice

Fall sports attract a host of students

Cool and mostly overcast skies greeted the return of fall sports practices at Powell High School on Monday. Athletes for the Panthers’ football, volleyball, swimming, cross country and tennis teams all gathered early to begin the process of preparing for the season ahead.

Men’s team selected No. 18 to begin year

Add another first for the young Northwest College men’s soccer team. For the first time in program history, the Trappers will begin play this fall with a national ranking.

Fall practices begin for NWC

Soccer teams host scrimmage in Cody on Monday

Summer is officially over at Northwest College as student-athletes for the men’s and women’s soccer teams as well as the Trappers’ volleyball program began fall practices on Monday. Teams will hold multiple practices daily in preparation for the official start of the fall season, which is later this month.

Last week marked one of those surprising open stretches on the Sports Guy’s calendar. That’s usually all the invitation I need to lace up the hiking boots and head into the hills.

Two days of competition start on Saturday

The Western States Shooting Association will conduct the Wyoming State Mounted Shooting Championships in Powell this Saturday and Sunday. The event will take place at the Park County Fairgrounds starting at 10 a.m. both days.

Participants, many dressed in Old West era attire, will take their turns riding through seven rounds of randomly selected course patterns featuring 10 targets. They’ll shoot single-action .45s loaded with black powder blanks with the goal of taking out all 10 targets in the shortest amount of time. Time is added for each target missed during a competitor’s run.

Practices start Monday at PHS

Fall sports practices will begin at Powell High School on Monday, Aug. 13. The Panthers’ football program will get things started when they convene at 6 a.m. on the PHS practice fields. Other sports will gather at later times of the day.

All athletes must have a sports physical before they will be allowed to begin practicing. Those who do not will not be allowed to participate in practice activities until they have completed a physical.
