Northwest College trainer heads state athletic trainers association

When she accepted a nomination last November to serve as the president of the Wyoming Athletic Trainers Association, Northwest College Head Athletic Trainer Liz Flom wasn’t really expecting to win the ensuing election. She did, and now she’s gradually adjusting to her new role.

Final batch of honorees known

Spring sports programs for Powell High School held their end-of-the-year award ceremonies this past week. Members of the track, boys’ and girls’ soccer programs were recognized by their teammates for their effort in competition and in practices.

More than 1,500 youth expected to participate in summer programs

School is almost out. The summer months approach. And for parents looking to keep their youngsters active and out of the house, the Powell Recreation District is waiting with an array of summer programming assured to offer something for just about everybody.

Sleep adds Mower honor to his haul

Powell High School seniors Drew Feller and Vince Sleep added additional highlights to their final spring in Panther uniforms. Feller was named the Wyoming Spirit of Sport award winner at the state track championships last weekend.

Full-strength team plays four against Angels

After a two-week layoff, the Powell Pioneers American Legion baseball team returns to the diamond this weekend for a pair of doubleheaders against the Billings Angels. Saturday’s games will take place in Billings while the Sunday games are held in Powell.

Boys team fourth overall

The Powell girls placed third and the boys fourth following a weekend of gritty performances at the 2013 state track and field championships in Casper. The Panthers crowned state champions in four events and had the state runner-up in six more events.

Powell loses to Lander, Worland

The Powell Panthers wrapped up a 4-14 season on the soccer pitch with losses to Lander and Worland at the 3A state boys’ soccer tournament in Jackson over the weekend. The Panthers dropped a 3-0 opening-round decision to Lander and followed in a Friday elimination game with a 2-1 loss to fellow Northwest quadrant foe, Worland.

Track, soccer teams start championship runs

The Powell Panthers open competition in the final postseason events of the 2012-2013 school year as the Powell boys’ soccer team opens 3A quarterfinal play against third-ranked Lander in Jackson at 11 a.m. today (Thursday). A short while later, pole vaulters Matthew Widdicombe, Brendon Phister and Hayden Cragoe and high jumper Anissa Warner will get things started for the Panther track team in Casper.

Youth shows in season opener

The Powell Pioneers dropped a doubleheader to open American Legion baseball season last Saturday. The team fell 7-5 and 12-7 to the Billings Halos in what head coach Jason Borders described as a learning experience.

 

Tuesday night, the Park County School District No. 1 board of trustees approved the recommendation of superintendent Kevin Mitchell to terminate the basketball coaching contract of Mike Heny. The move comes months after the Panthers made an appearance in the state championship game, after two of the three most prolific scorers in Panther basketball history had graduated under his tenure and after he built the program up from a 3-23 beginning.
