West Hernandez edges wade for golf club title

West Hernandez capitalized on brother Wade Hernandez’s misfortune over the final two holes to capture the 2012 Powell Golf Club championship title on Sunday. West fired rounds of 70 and 69 during the two-day event to score a two-stroke margin of victory and reclaim the club title that he last held in 2010.

Beuster, Gilmore each placed on first team

Four members of the Powell Pioneers American Legion baseball team earned all-state recognition for their play this summer. Shortstop Seth Gilmore and pitcher/first baseman Jake Beuster were tabbed as first team all-state selections.

Frankie Vogt and Josh Cragoe were both named to the second team.

Tuesday night was supposed to be one of those bonding sorts of moments I could look back upon years from now with a smile and a tear in my eye. The Sports Guy and Daddy’s Little Princess were going to sit down in the living room and watch USA women’s gymnastics competition.

Northwest champion Pioneers miss state for second year

The Cody Cubs used a two-out double in the ninth inning to score their first victory in six years over the Powell Pioneers, 13-12 on Saturday. The loss brought a disappointing end to the Pioneers’ season and marks the second straight year the Northwest quadrant champs will be sitting at home during the state tournament.

The Mountain West held media days this week. Once again, I failed to come up with the winning argument for why my publishers should send me on a three-day paid junket to Las Vegas to attend. As a result, my ballot did not get counted in the preseason media poll.

So as I do every year at this time, I offer, for public ridicule, how yours truly sees things shaping up in the MW this fall.

Beuster throws no-hitter to ready team for tournament

Powell Pioneers pitcher Jake Beuster made the most of an abbreviated senior night on Saturday, throwing a complete-game no-hitter against a formidable Miles City squad. He was backed up by an explosion of offense as the Pioneers cruised to a 19-0 win.

Spot in semifinals nixed after Greybull-Basin protest

The Powell Babe Ruth all-star team saw a spot in the state semifinals taken away after the team was forced to vacate a pool-play win against Torrington. The reversal of what had been a Powell victory dropped the all-stars to third place in their pool, eliminating them from play.

“It hit us like a ton of bricks,” said Babe Ruth all-stars head coach Pudge Fagan. “As soon as they called game over, we were like ‘oh no.’”

Sweep of Cody locks Powell Pioneers at No. 1

After breezing through the opener, the Powell Pioneers American Legion baseball team found themselves fighting for a victory in the nightcap at Cody on Tuesday night. In the end, Powell brought home a pair of wins to secure the Northwest quadrant title and a No. 1 seed in the district tournament for another summer.

Once upon a time, before my entire life seemed to revolve around sports schedules, practice schedules and the hyperactive wanderings of two small children, I would consider this week to be roughly the midpoint of my summer experience.

I know better now. This isn’t a midpoint. This is closer to the end.

Team heads to state in Gillette

The Powell Babe Ruth 15-year-olds head to state tournament play as a number-one seed this week following a sweep of the competition in district play. The Powell all-stars defeated Cody, Lovell and Greybull-Basin on successive days to capture the district title.
