A 39-year-old man accused of abducting and assaulting an 11-year-old Cody girl is being held on a $2 million cash-only bond — twice the amount being used to secure a man charged with premeditated murder in Park County.

Taking up a decision that could affect the garbage rates of residents across Park and Big Horn counties, the city of Powell is mulling whether hauling its trash to Cowley would be cheaper than going to the one in Cody.

 

After an intense week-long investigation, a 39-year-old Montana man was arrested Saturday in connection with the Oct. 8 abduction of an 11-year-old Cody girl.

Jesse Paul Speer of Manhattan, Mont., was arrested Saturday evening in Belgrade, Mont., after police reportedly matched his vehicle to the one used to abduct the girl and found that he matched the description of the suspect. Speer has been charged in Park County with felony counts of kidnapping, aggravated assault and using a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Investigators have released a sketch of the man they are seeking in connection with a Monday, Oct. 8 abduction in Cody.

Police have been asking local citizens to keep a lookout for the man who abducted a Cody girl on Monday, and now, they're asking residents to keep their eyes peeled for a different man who may be posing as FBI agent.

Police at the local, state and federal levels are searching for a man in a Toyota SR-5 4-Runner who reportedly abducted an 11-year-old girl on Monday in Cody and later released her in the Carter Mountain area.

French alone says it isn’t needed

Perhaps the most fundamental question Park County voters need to answer before casting their ballot on a proposed fifth cent of sales is whether there’s a need.

Local and federal authorities are searching for a man who is reported to have lured an 11-year-old Cody girl into his car and sexually assaulted her on Monday. Cody police are specifically asking for help from hunters who were in the Carter Mountain area that afternoon.

A white man described as 55 to 60 years old is reported to have enticed the 11-year-old into his car in front of the Park County Complex on Monday afternoon, according to a Tuesday news release from Cody Police Chief Perry Rockvam posted on the City of Cody's website.

Police have located an 11-year-old girl who had reportedly been taken from Cody on Monday evening, according to a message from the Emergency Broadcast System.

The Amber Alert for the girl was cancelled at a little after 9 p.m., about two-and-a-half hours after it was issued.

Cody police told CBS News Channel 5 in Cheyenne that Katelynn was "alright" and found in Cody, according to a Facebook posting by one of the channel's reporters.

"Please keep her in your thoughts," said Cody Police Officer John Harris in a Monday night posting on Facebook. Harris confirmed that the girl was alive, but gave no other information.

The original information, released to media on Monday night by Cody police, stated that the 11-year-old had last been seen getting into a newer white four-door Toyota at the Park County Library. The alert had said a 55- to 60-year-old white man enticed the girl into the vehicle under the auspices of looking for his dog.

A man who allegedly was an intended target of a shooting in Cody this summer has accepted a six- to eight-year prison sentence for conspiring to sell drugs.
