Avenges earlier loss to Mountain View

The conference’s top and last-place teams came to the Lady Panthers’ gym last weekend and the Powell High School girls exacted some revenge on each.

PHS’ basketball team took down Class 3A West leader Lyman 42-39 on Friday, then beat Mountain View 35-31 on Saturday.

Partnering with other groups

Rather than act as a lone wolf, Park County is joining a pack of sportsmen, agricultural and local government groups to support Wyoming’s wolf management plan in federal court.

In past litigation over the management of the controversial predator, Park County acted independently, having the Park County Attorney’s Office represent its unique interests as home to the bulk of the state-managed wolves.

It’s only good news for now

Park County commissioners’ lack of faith in the federal government appears to have paid off in a big way this week.

Unsure the government would continue writing checks to Park County, commissioners had budgeted last summer for a big drop in annual federal payments known as Secure Rural Schools funding.

A Clark Recreation District?

Bill to let Clark split from Powell fails

A state Senate committee has killed a bill that would have enabled the Clark community to break with the Powell Recreation District and form its own.

Clark proponents of the split say they’re not getting their fair share of the Powell Recreation District’s budget, while Powell district officials say there’s typically not enough projects to use up the money currently being set aside for the Clark community.

Panther girls go high-low for wins

Two entirely different games ended the same way last weekend: with Powell High School’s girls’ basketball team on top.

The Lady Panthers earned a pair of wins in Class 3A West by beating Lander in a fast-paced 51-41 shootout before slogging it out with Pinedale to win 33-15.

Powell Circuit Court saved?

Legislative committee proposes keeping court open

Powell’s Circuit Court may not be headed toward closure after all.

On Friday, the state Legislature’s Joint Appropriations Committee recommended the state budget money to keep open the satellite Circuit Courts in Powell, Lovell and Dubois.

While not endorsing a bill that would strip Wyoming’s elected Superintendent of Public Instruction of most of her power, Gov. Matt Mead defended the proposal from its critics during a speech on Friday.

The Wyoming Senate has passed a measure (Senate File 104) that would give most of Superintendent Cindy Hill’s duties to an education director appointed by the governor.

Three more charges filed against Jesse Speer

A Montana man faces three more felony charges in connection with the October abduction and rape of an 11-year-old girl in Cody.

Jesse Speer, 40, now faces counts of first- and second-degree sexual assault for allegedly raping and sexually touching the girl, and a new count of aggravated assault for allegedly threatening her with a gun before doing so. An additional $1 million has been tacked onto Speer’s $2 million bond, meaning he must pay $3 million in cash if he wants to be released while his criminal cases are pending.

Panther girls trump Riverton

Edged by Cody in nail-biter

Despite a stunning comeback and some last-second heroics from senior Alyssa Hildebrand, the Lady Panther basketball team lost to Cody 51-48 on a last-second basket in overtime Friday. The Powell High School’s girls rebounded with a 30-23 victory over Class 4A Riverton on Saturday.
