An armed couple sought by U.S. Marshals led a Wyoming Highway patrolman on a high-speed chase last month that ended only after their car got stuck and an attempt to hide in a creek failed.

Police say Nicole Rae Presfield, 32, and Raymond Lee Norcutt Sr., 57, gave fake names and fled after being pulled over for speeding on July 17 on Wyoming Highway 120 between Thermopolis and Meeteetse.

Powell High School has some big golf shoes to fill after losing three All-State players to graduation.

The golf teams — which start their competitive season today (Thursday) — are coming off a 2012 campaign in which the girls took second in Class 3A (also winning the Class 3A West Conference Tournament) while the boys finished third at state and runner-up at conference.

“We lost five seniors total ... so with those spots to fill, people may not have the same expectations of us here at the beginning of the year,” said PHS head coach Troy Hildebrand. “But I look for us to just try to get better each week throughout the season and hopefully — if we can be playing our best at the end, having conference at home — maybe we can have some of that same success that we had last year.”

During a stretch of cooler weather last week, Shoshone National Forest officials thought the Hardluck Fire — burning in the remote Washakie Wilderness in southwestern Park County — might be slowing down.

When Paul Cardwell was caught in Thailand two months ago, one lingering question was how the former Powell Valley Healthcare CEO and fraud suspect made it overseas without his passport.

Barring any further budget cuts by the state of Wyoming, the Powell Circuit Court should remain open for at least the next couple years.

That’s despite the fact that state court administrators in Cheyenne continue to believe that consolidating the courts to one office in Cody would save money and be more efficient.

Paul Cardwell is back in Wyoming — and he’ll be staying for a while.

At a Monday hearing in Cheyenne, U.S. District Court Judge Nancy D. Freudenthal ordered the former Powell Valley Healthcare CEO and alleged confidence man to be kept in federal custody pending an Aug. 9 hearing.
