Voluntary early retirement incentive programs for Northwest College faculty and staff are among the strategies being considered to help reduce the college’s expenses by $2 million. 

Rural hospitals in the United States are struggling, partly due to increased federal requirements and decreased federal reimbursements.

A discussion last month about the possibility of Wyoming participating in the federal Refugee Resettlement Program was a good step in the right direction.

This is a tough time for rural hospitals.

Doug McMillan, chief executive officer at West Park Hospital in Cody, said more than 100 rural hospitals have closed in the past 10 years.

The last part of a school year is a stressful time for students, teachers and administrators at any college. This year, that’s particularly true at Northwest College, where recent projections indicate a $2.3 million shortfall in revenue for the 2016-17 school year.

Big Bertha, Bonkers, Dusty and Chicken Little became city chicks last fall.

“When we first got them, they were pretty small,” said Krista Buhler, who, along with her fiancé, Chancey Stebner, owns the chickens and houses them in the couple’s backyard on Bent Street.

Tuition to increase $6 per credit hour

Students at Northwest College and other Wyoming community colleges will pay higher tuition next year.

College community asked to help identify possible cuts

Northwest College leaders were braced for reductions in state and local funding for the coming year, but the actual revenue shortfall is worse than their previously envisioned worst-case scenario.

Raising student fees at Northwest College or decreasing the number of tuition-free credit-hours for full-time students are among measures being considered for raising revenue at the college.
