Cody teen Sydney Gunn took part in the Girls’ Junior America’s Golf Cup tournament in Hawaii last week. Gunn was one of four teenagers to represent Wyoming in the event.

Competitors played three rounds on Wailea Golf Club’s Gold Course, located in Maui. The course was set up to play a distance of 6,042 yards and to a par of 72 for the three-day tournament. The tournament saw the three lowest scores from each team each day count toward an overall team score. A total of 18 teams, representing various western states and Mexico, took part.

Gunn tied for Wyoming’s low round of the day on day three of the competition. She also contributed her score as the team’s second-lowest golfer on the first two days of competition. For the tournament, Gunn turned in rounds of 94, 98 and 92. The performance placed her 69th overall in the field and second on Team Wyoming’s roster. Team Wyoming finished last out of the 18 teams in attendance.

Good Ol’ Boys

On July 24, the Good Ol’ Boys engaged in a game of yellow ball, requiring each member of the team to play the scoring yellow ball for at least four holes. The net score for the yellow ball, plus the two lowest net scores from the three remaining foursome members were counted as the team score.

The final scorecards showed the foursome of Dave Bonner, Jim Turk, Kevin Lineback and Ray Nelson scoring a six-stroke victory over Ron Rickert, Jerry Scheafer, Bud Linton and Lloyd Snyder with a final winning score of 191. Three foursomes tied for third-place honors, 11 strokes off the winning pace.

Ron Rickert’s 78 was the low gross score for the day. Ray Nelson’s 66 was good enough for the low net.

Deuces were recorded by Ken Rochlitz (holes 4 and 17) and Bob Mason (hole 4).

On July 17, the format was for one net score from the first nine holes, two net scores from holes 10-17 and three net scores on hole 18.

The foursome of Larry Hedderman, Jerry Scheafer, Bob Gallagher and Mike Dantic finished with a score of 91, one stroke better than the runner-up group of Joe Bailey, Ray Nelson, Ron Rickert and Lloyd Snyder.

The foursome of Dwight Gilbert, Doug Conner, Ken Rochlitz and Bud Linton carded a team score of 95 to place third.

Doug Conner’s 73 was the low gross score. Ray Nelson’s 61 was the day’s low net score. Three deuces were carded, going to Jerry Scheafer (hole 17), Doug Conner (hole 4) and Tom Bibbey (hole 8).

Thursday Follies

The team of Ray Nelson, Jan Bailey, Ross Albin, and Sherry Nelson shared first-place honors with Jerry Linsdau, Kay Copenhaver, Wes Metzler and Lloyd Snyder on July 26. Both teams finished the day with 123 points.

Jerry Linsdau had the only birdie of the day, going under par on hole 10. Linsdau’s team also won skins for the best score on holes 1 and 17.

Ray Nelson had the low gross score for the day with an 81.
