NWC women’s basketball team named to academic honor roll

Posted

The Northwest College women’s basketball team and  head coach Janis Beal have been named to the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s academic top 25 team honor roll for the 2011-12 season. NWC interim athletic director Rex Myers announced the honor late last week.

The WBCA academic top 25 annually recognizes all NCAA divisions, the NAIA and junior/community college women’s basketball teams across the nation that carry the highest combined grade point averages inclusive of all student-athletes on their rosters for the entire season, according to Beth Bass, the association’s CEO. The Trapper women’s team ranked number two among two-year college programs with an overall team GPA of 3.363.

“Like winning on the court, academic success on a team level does not happen by accident,” Bass said. “It requires a group of student-athletes who realize the importance of education and earning their degrees, coaches who expect and encourage their players to attend class and study and administrators who provide strong academic support programs for their athletes.”

This is the second set of academic accolades earned by the Northwest College women’s basketball program. The Trapper women were also honored by the National Junior College Athletic Association earlier this summer for its overall team GPA.
