New course route draws huge field

Runners from Powell found the re-routed Beartooth 10K course to their liking on Saturday. Every Powell entrant placed in the top four of their age group while four local runners placed in the top two.After years of running up the Rock Creek valley and switchbacks to Vista Point, race organizers relocated the 2012 Beartooth 10K to the pinnacle of the Beartooth Highway. The move was made for both safety and logistical reasons, but also allows the race to lay claim to being the highest altitude road-race in the United States outside of Colorado. Approximately 170 runners entered this year’s race, almost triple the number of entries the race has received in recent years. Alejandro Garcia of Billings and Erin Oley of Red Lodge claimed the men’s and women’s 10K overall titles.
