Pioneers go 4-for-4 in Cody

Posted

The Powell Pioneers found production up and down the lineup over the weekend, going undefeated in four tournament games in Cody. The Pioneers scored wins over the Halos and Angels out of Billings, as well as wins over Cody and Lovell.

“We got production from everyone this weekend,” said Pioneer coach Mike Jameson, whose team now sports a 10-8 record, the first time all season the Pioneers have been above the .500 mark.

“Gage Henderson was like 6-for-7 for us on Saturday. Frankie (Vogt) swung a good bat. Jake Beuster had some big hits. I think everyone had their moment this weekend at the plate,” Jameson said.

The Pioneers also enjoyed four solid appearances on the pitching mound. Powell received quality starts from each of its four starting pitchers, including a pair of complete-game performances.

About the only area for concern for the Pioneers came on the defensive side. Powell finished the weekend with multi-error games in three of the four contests played.

“Obviously the defense is an area that we’d like to shore up a little more,” said Jameson. “We’re coming along though. The younger kids stepped it up this weekend. We should have more of our team for this weekend. Hopefully we can keep improving and build on this.”

The Pioneers travel to Williston, N.D., this week for a tournament. Powell opens Thursday against Thief River Falls, Minn. Over the next three days, the team will play four more games against Glasgow, Mont., Sidney, Mont., Dickinson, N.D. and the host team from Williston.

The next home action for Powell comes on Tuesday, June 19, when the Pioneers host Cody in a pair of conference games.

Powell 15, Angels 4

Hayden Cragoe pitched a complete-game victory for the Pioneers in a run-shortened contest.

Justin Lynn finished 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and a triple. Frankie Vogt added a 3-for-4 perforance that included a home run and five RBIs. Cragoe and Bryce Wright were both 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Powell 9, Halos 8 (9 inn.)

Jake Beuster’s one-out single in the bottom of the ninth allowed the Pioneers to pass their only real test of the Cody tournament, delivering a 9-8 victory to Powell.

After falling behind 2-0 early, the Pioneers tied the game in the second thanks to an RBI triple off the bat of Gage Henderson and an RBI single from Jared Wantulok. Powell added four more in the bottom of the third as the Pioneers batted around the order, but the 6-2 lead was short-lived as the Halos answered with four runs in the top of the fourth.

Vogt’s two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth gave Powell the lead again and was part of a four RBI game. The Halos tied the game with two runs in the sixth inning to force extra innings.

Henderson finished 4-for-4 at the dish with his triple. Beuster was 3-for-4 and Lynn 3-for-5.

Gilmore came on in the seventh inning to throw the win for Powell. He tagged in for Ty Whiteman, who provided six solid innings of work, but was betrayed at times by a defense that produced three errors behind him.

Powell 21, Cody 1

Beuster struck out nine and held tournament host Cody to just four hits and a walk on Saturday night as the Pioneers cruised to victory.

Heny finished 2-for-4 with a grand slam home run. Henderson continued to swing a hot bat, going 2-for-4 with four RBIs and a double in the contest. Beuster aided his own cause with a two-run triple as he and Gilmore also produced a pair of hits for the Powell offense, which also drew nine walks off Cody pitching.

Powell sent 13 batters to the plate as part of a nine-run first inning. The Pioneers tacked on eight more in the third inning to vault to a 17-1 advantage, then turned in some stellar glove work to get out of a jam in the bottom half of the third.

Cody appeared to have something going in the bottom half of the third, getting runners on first and second with no outs, but found itself the victim of some nifty glove work. Bryce Wright snared a screaming line drive down the first base line while virtually standing on the the bag to double up the Cody runner leading off from first. His throw over to second base beat a diving Cubs baserunner heading back to that bag as well, giving the Pioneers a rarely-seen triple play.

Powell 23, Lovell 7

Playing in a howling west wind, the Pioneers unleashed a 17-run fourth inning to break open what, until that point, had been a close ball game.

The Pioneers struggled early in the windy conditions, which featured a 40 mile per hour gale howling out to right field that transformed even the most routine fly ball into a white-knuckle adventure.

After falling behind by scores of 3-0, 5-3 and 7-6, the Pioneers uncorked their monster inning to break the game wide open. Beuster homered twice, driving home five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Cragoe and Gilmore also drove balls out of the park as Powell sent a whopping 21 batters to the plate before Lovell could end the nightmare.

Beuster finished the contest 4-for-5 at the plate. Josh Cragoe, seeing his only action of the weekend due to his appearance in the Wyoming Shrine Bowl, went 2-for-2 with a double before being lifted. Hayden Cragoe finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs as Powell banged out 15 hits and drew nine walks from Lovell pitching.

Heny was the beneficiary of the Pioneers’ outburst as he picked up the win on the mound. Heny threw four innings, allowing seven runs, many of which were unearned due to four errors in the field behind him. Heny struck out seven batters and walked a pair.

Vogt threw a scoreless fifth inning to close out the game for Powell, notching two of his three outs via strikeout.
