Hanlin named coach of the year in 3A West
Four members of Powell High School’s soccer teams were honored with all-conference recognition. Eight more were named to the second team or honorable mention rolls while Panther girls’ head coach Brett Hanlin was honored with coach of the year status by his peers in the 3A West conference.
Hanlin coached Powell to a 2-11 season that got off to a slow start after the Panthers were forced to withdraw from the season-opening jamboree due to a lack of players. As the season progressed, the Panthers turned some heads, not for their wins, but for their level of increased competitiveness within the difficult western side of Wyoming.
The Panthers captured a 1-0 victory over then-No. 2 Star Valley, took a ranked Lander side into overtime before falling and dropped one-goal decisions to state powers Jackson and Cody. The Panthers’ season was cut shy of the state tournament with a shoot-out loss to Torrington.
On Hanlin’s Panther team, senior four-year letterwinners Czarina Baker and Jessica Harris both earned all-conference status. Taylor Swenson, Sierra Baker and Shelby Nicholson were all named to the conference’s second team.
For the Powell boys, head coach Travis Rapp reports that seniors Cooper Wise and Keithen Schwahn were both all-conference selections for the Panthers. Powell’s boys also produced five honorable mention all-conference selections in the form of Cody Wichman, Dewey Schwahn, Heston Swenson, Ethan Landers and Ty Ouellette.
None of the Powell players was selected for all-state honors, marking the second year the Panthers have been shut out of statetwide recognition. Last year, a miscommunication in state meeting times led the Panthers to not have representation at the selection meeting, likely preventing the school’s players from receiving some deserved recognition.
