Panther track Season nears finish line

3A West regional meet this week

The Powell Panthers finished preparations for this week’s 3A West regional meet with strong showings at the Cody Trackstravaganza last Friday. The Panther boys continued their streak of championship finishes with a 37-point win over Cody. The Panther girls placed second, just 14.5 points off Cody’s title pace.

Powell added five automatic qualifiers to the state meet, all of which came on the girls’ side. The Panthers added a pair of automatic qualifiers in the 200 meters as Desiree Murray and KaDee Harrison each clocked times that were a few hundredths of a second faster than what was needed to earn a spot in the state prelims.

Tori Sleep removed some of the drama from this week’s 3A West regional meet by surpassing the qualifying standard in both the shot put and discus to negate the need to finish in the top eight this week. Gretchen Morretti, already automatically qualified in the 3200 meters for state, added a spot in the 1600-meter field for herself.

On the boys’ side, Powell failed to add automatic qualifiers, but continued its season-long streak of dominance. The Panthers were fueled in part thanks to 1-2-3 finishes in both the 110-meter hurdles, where Kalei Smith came up just hundredths of a second shy of automatically qualifying for state, and in the shot put, where Garrett Michael narrowly missed adding his name to the stable of state throwers sporting Panther colors.

Each will have another shot to qualify this week, where the top eight finishers from the region, as well as all competitors surpassing the qualifying standard in their event, advance to next week’s state championship meet in Casper.

The 3A West regional meet starts Friday with prelims and some event finals. The bulk of the championship action takes place Saturday in Powell.
