Cragoe, Lynch each take second for PanthersThe Powell Panthers were shut out of the win column, but still managed to post a number of impressive showings at the Wyoming Track Classic on Monday. The event in Casper had been scheduled for last Saturday before inclement weather forced organizers to issue a delay.

Senior Josh Cragoe had one of the Panthers’ best performances of the day. The Panthers 110-meter hurdler sprinted to a season-best time of 14.76 seconds in the event. That was only good enough for runner-up honors, however. Lander’s Tanner Simpson won the race with a time of 14.51 as the pair was more than half a second in front of the rest of the elite field.

Gretchen Moretti shaved eight seconds off her season-best time in the 3200 meters. Moretti began the meet for the Panthers with a fourth-place showing in a time of 12:43.65.

The Panthers received another fourth-place showing in the boys’ 1600. After four laps around the track, Zander Andreason was part of a three-way photo finish at the line as he, Sheridan’s Chris Garber and Kelly Walsh’s Hunter Davila finished within one-quarter of a second of one another.

Andreason was ruled to have crossed the finish line in fourth place, receiving an official time of 4:55.74.

In the middle distances, Powell’s Desiree Murray placed eighth in the 400, clocking a time of 1:05.53, four seconds off her season best. Sierra Morrow was 10th in the girls’ 800 with a time of 2:44.25, also well off her season-best pace. In the boys’ 800, Zach Thiel was 10th overall, clocking a time of 2:08.94.

Over in the throwing rings, Garrett Lynch and Vince Sleep provided Powell with a 2-3 finish in the shot put. Lynch improved upon his season-best mark in the shot with a toss of 53-8. Sleep followed suit, adding nearly six inches onto his previous best this year and finishing with a best toss of 52-11 3/4.

Neither could keep pace with Upton’s Kevin Allen, who blew away his 2012 best by almost 4 feet in winning the event with a distance of 56-2 3/4. Allen also won the boys’ discus with a throw of 192-9.

Lynch and Sleep were also in action in the discus ring for the Panthers, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively. Lynch was unable to match his school-record performance in Lovell, settling for a best throw of 153-1 for the day. Sleep added 9 inches to his season best, finishing with a distance of 149-6.

In the girls’ throwing events, Shawnea Harrington was sixth in the discus with a throw of 114-4 that almost matched her season-best. Alice Pinter added a ninth-place showing for Powell, finishing at 98-11.

Harrington added a sixth-place finish in the shot put to wrap up the day for the Panthers. Harrington’s best throw for the day was 35-11 1/2.
