Panther boys win Lovell track title

PHS Girls take second over weekend

A school record tumbled as the Powell Panther boys captured the championship Saturday at the Lovell Invitational track meet. The Panther girls secured still another runner-up finish for the year.

Sophomore Garrett Lynch penned his name to the Powell High School record book with a winning heave of 167-9. The toss surpasses Dusty Harvey’s previous school-best throw, which had survived on the record books since the spring of 1993. The throw also added 13 feet onto Lynch’s season-best throw.

The event win was one of two for Lynch on Saturday. He also captured the shot put with a distance of 53-7 1/2, an improvement of more than 6 inches to his previous best.

Teammate Vince Sleep added a third-place performance in the shot, tossing 52-6 3/4 and improving by more than 2 feet over his previous best this season.

Distance runner Zander Andreasen also captured a pair of titles on Saturday for the Panther boys. Andreasen automatically qualified for state in the 1600 meters with a winning time of 4:47.0, capturing the title by just over a second. In the 3200, Andreasen cruised to a seven-second title.

Other automatic qualifiers for the Panther boys included Marco Borja in the 100 and Zach Thiel in the 800.

The Panther boys captured the team title by a 78-point margin, scoring 187.33 points. Only the host Bulldogs of Lovell managed more than 78 team points on the day as they finished with 109.33 points.

On the girls’ side, senior Desiree Murray automatically qualified for her third event at the state meet after breezing around the oval for a winning time of 1:00.81 in the 400 meters. Murray had previously qualified for state in the 100 and 300-meter hurdle events.

In the discus ring, Alice Pinter added nearly 20 feet onto her season-best distance to automatically qualify for state. Pinter’s throw was also good enough for a 1-inch margin of victory in the event as the Panthers finished 1-2-3 with Shawnea Harrington and Emily Kath following her in the standings. Kath, like Pinter, showcased incredible improvement, adding 21 feet onto her season best and moving within 2 feet of an automatic place at the state meet.

The other new automatic qualifier for the Panther girls on Saturday was distance runner Tally Wells. Wells carved more than 12 seconds from her previous season-best in the 1600 meters to best the automatic qualifying standard and place third in the event.

Also turning in a noteworthy performance was sprinter KaDee Harrison, who broke the 13-second barrier twice while winning the 100 meters. Harrison ran a time of 12.93 seconds in the preliminaries, then followed that with a 12.98 in the finals to edge Riverside’s Kinli Vigil.

The Panther girls finished with 102.5 points, second to only Lovell’s total of 129.5. The Panthers held a 38-point cushion over their next-closest pursuer, Thermopolis.

The Panthers will learn later this week about which of their members have qualified to participate in the Wyoming Track Classic in Casper on Friday. Students not participating in that meet will be in Thermopolis for the high school invitational meet taking place there.
