The Powell High School cheerleading squad placed fourth overall in the all-girl cheer category at the state spirit competition in Casper. The Panthers also competed in non-stunt and dance routines.
Powell’s all-girl routine earned a score of 41 points, placing the team fourth among eight teams to attend the 3A competition. Douglas won the state title with a score of 59.667 points, 10 more than state runner-up Cokeville.
Rawlins scored a third-place finish with 44 points while Wheatland, Kemmerer, Thermopolis and Lyman each followed the Panthers.
“I was very happy with the girls and their performance,” said Panther cheer coach Vicki Walsh. “The competition was very tough this year and the girls went out and did an awesome job.”
The Panthers scored an eighth-place finish in the non-stunt portion of the competition. Powell scored 76.333 points to finish mid-table in the field of 15 schools.
Lyman won the state title with a score of 91 points. Cokeville (87.667), Douglas (84.667) and Wheatland (81) rounded out the top four in that category.
“It is always a great thing when you bring home a trophy, no matter if it is first or fourth,” Walsh said. “I was just very excited to have placed. I am very proud of the girls and all their hard work. It paid off.”
In the dance division of the state spirit contest, Powell placed eighth out of nine schools, scoring 55 points on the judges’ evaluation forms. Lander was the 3A state title winner with a score of 89.333. Lovell (87.667), Star Valley (86.333) and Jackson (81) rounded out the top four, who were 12 points higher than the rest of the field.
