Win over Worland caps swimmers’ regular season

The Powell Lady Panthers closed their regular season with a dual meet win over Worland last week.

Although the Lady Warriors won eight of the 12 events, thanks to the efforts of Haley Krump, Carolyn Kennedy, Kristen Kennedy and Abby Carver, Powell girls used their depth to dominate the other four and take a 102-81 team win.

The Lady Panthers took the lead early with a one-two finish in the medley relay. Sarah Wurzel, Courtenay Zorgati, Anya Tracy and Baxter Heinert led the field and SarahJean O’Neill, Katelyn Lang, Lydia Allen and Hannah Cordes finished second.

Worland scored first-place points in the butterfly, thanks to Kristen Kennedy, but Wurzel, Belen Quillen, Megan Curtis and Bianca Larsen finished second through fifth. Worland grabbed three of the top slots in the 100 freestyle, led by Carolyn Kennedy’s first place while Tracy swam to second and O’Neill to fourth in the event for the Lady Panthers.

Powell’s third first-place finish came from Allen in the 500 freestyle. Celine Hall came in second and Natalie Quillen and Reba Lawrence finished fourth and fifth. Worland won both first and third in the 200 freestyle relay, with Moretti, Tracy, Rausch and Belen Quillen taking second for Powell.

Powell swept the first three places in the backstroke, with Zorgati taking first, Rausch second and Racheal Bright third. Lady Warrior Krump got her second win in the breaststroke by just .3 seconds over Moretti, and Katelyn Lang finished third.

Worland closed the meet with a win in the 400 freestyle, but Powell took second and third. Belen Quillen, Wurzel, Moretti and Zorgati were second and Rausch, Hall, Allen and O’Neill were third.

The girls have one more chance to swim qualifying times this weekend when they travel to Cody for the conference meet. The meet begins Friday at 1 p.m. with preliminary rounds, and finals will begin Saturday at 10 a.m.
