Weekend fundraisers to help Alexa Lazar-Minnix

The Hitting 4 Hometown Heroes charity softball tournament will take place this weekend at Powell’s Homesteader Park. The event will raise funds to help defray hospital expenses for Alexa (Lexi) Lazar-Minnix to receive treatment at Craig Hospital in Denver.

Lazar-Minnix, a junior at Powell High School, was involved in a car accident back in January and has been hospitalized since.

“We did a softball tournament last year and we were asked by the teams who came to do it again this year,” said Jessica Laughlin, one of the event’s organizers. “We asked a couple people around town and they knew the family and knew that Lexi still wasn’t doing well, so we decided to use the event to help them out this year.”

A total of 11 softball teams have already paid the entry fee to sign up for the two-day tournament. Registration continues to run through this evening (Thursday) for any last-minute additions.

In addition to the two-day event, which will see softball games starting at 8:30 a.m. both days, a benefit spaghetti dinner will be held Saturday night at the Eagles. For $10 a plate (children 10 and under eat free), those attending can enjoy a meal of spaghetti, garlic bread and salad. Beginning at 9 p.m., the band Rhino will provide music.

Tickets for the dinner are being pre-sold at Heart Mountain Pub, the NWC book store, Polecat Printery and at the Eagles. Tickets will also be sold at the door on Saturday night.

“We’ll have a freewill donation at the games both Saturday and Sunday, as well as at the dinner,” said Laughlin. “Lexi’s family will be here for Saturday and probably Sunday as well. We’re hoping to help them raise money to help pay for Craig Hospital, which I guess is the best spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury hospital in this part of the country.”
