Bushnell wins men’s club championship

Zane Bushnell edged out Colby Stenerson by two strokes to claim the men’s gross title at the 2011 Powell Golf Club championship over the weekend.

Bushnell completed rounds of 81 and 75 for a gross total of 156. Stenerson followed with 159 for the weekend’s play.

For the men’s net championship, Jory Wantulok received top honors. Toby Bonner and Bryan Borcher tallied identical net scores to tie for second place.

In the women’s division, Karen Holcombe and defending champion Laurie Lee had identical scores for gross totals. On the first day of play, Holcombe shot an 84 and Lee trailed with an 88. On the second day, they reversed the scores — Lee shot an 84, and Holcombe an 88. The two squared off for the gross title in a sudden death playoff that went four holes, with Holcombe finishing as the champion and Lee taking second.

For the women’s net count, Susan Esquivel finished four strokes ahead of Soni Whitmore to win the title.

In the senior division championship, Rick Norberg took the gross title victory over John Lafko. Norberg’s winning score was 161 after carding rounds of 81 and 80 during the weekend tourney. Lafko finished second and Mike Foulger followed in third place with 178.

Tracy Copenhaver took top honors in the men’s net championship, followed by Joe Hicks in second and Gary Ladd in third.

In the senior’s first flight, Bob Mason’s 159 gross won by seven strokes. Ken Rochlitz’s 138 earned him the net honor, edging out the second place net winner Jerry Scheafer’s 139 net total.

This year’s club championships drew 41 golfers.
