Babe Ruth team goes after threepeat

The Powell Babe Ruth All-Stars began their quest for a threepeat state championship on Wednesday in Rock Springs. The Babe Ruth state tournament was originally scheduled to be held in Evanston, but moved to Rock Springs in the week before the event.

Powell opened the tournament with an afternoon pool play contest against Wheatland on Wednesday. The All-Stars defeated Wheatland by a narrow 12-11 decision.

Powell plays the host Rock Springs squad at 7 p.m. tonight (Thursday). Pool play for Powell concludes on Friday with a 1 p.m. game against Casper. The top two teams from each pool advance to the semifinals.

Teams in the tournament’s other pool include Laramie, Sheridan, Cody and Green River. Semifinal games are scheduled for 9 a.m. and noon on Saturday. The championship game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.

Powell has won each of the last two Wyoming Babe Ruth 14-15 age division state titles. Last year’s Powell team went on to reach the semifinal round of the Northwest regional Babe Ruth tournament in Oregon.

Members of this year’s Babe Ruth All-Star squad include Zander Andreasen, Matt Brown, Shawnea Harrington, Cory Heny, Tony Lujan, Garrett Lynch, Jake MaGill, Seth McCamen, Brendon Phister, Matt Sweet, Jared Wantulok and Ty Whiteman. Coaches for the team include Pudge Fagan, Scott Heny, Tony Douzenis and Jory Wantulok.

The All-Stars advanced to the state meet by virtue of a runner-up finish last week in district tournament play. Powell defeated Greybull 20-11 and Lovell 22-7, but failed in two attempts to defeat Cody. Powell fell 5-4 and 13-2 in those two games, but could have a chance to avenge the losses this week in Rock Springs.

Only the champion from the state tournament advances to regional play.
