Last regular-season event May 6-8
The Northwest College men’s and women’s rodeo teams placed sixth at Dawson Community College over the weekend. Only one regular-season rodeo remains on the Big Sky Region calendar.
Rebecca Toavs turned in the Trappers’ top performance of the weekend with a third-place finish in barrel racing. The Trapper women also received a fifth-place finish from Jessica Ehlers in breakaway roping and an eighth-place finish from Pam Vanek in goat tying.
As a team, the trio amassed 15 points for the Trappers, who finished tied for sixth place with the University of Great Falls. Dawson’s women’s team defended its home arena, edging the University of Montana for top honors.
On the men’s side, Montana, Western cruised to the team title by producing nearly three times the number of points of any other school in the field. Miles Community College held off the University of Montana for second place with 440 points.
Northwest College tallied 160 points at the rodeo.
As has been the case throughout the spring, the Trappers’ points largely came in bareback riding. Big Sky Region leader Jordan Gill led a 5-6-7 finish for Trapper riders over the weekend. Seth Shelton and Jacob Griffis followed in the standings.
Despite finishing behind four riders, Gill’s lead in the Big Sky Region standings remained secure, virtually assuring him of a spot in the College National Finals rodeo field.
The only other Trappers to earn a place in the standings at Dawson were the header-heeler team roping tandem of Ike Shaw and Cole Owens. The pair finished in seventh position in the final standings.
As a team, Northwest College continues to sit in fourth place overall in the women’s regional standings. The Trapper men are in fifth position.
Northwest College wraps up the regular season on May 6-8 when the Trappers head to the University of Montana for the final Big Sky Region event. At that time, the top two men’s and women’s teams and the top three individuals in each event will qualify for the CNFR.
Aside from Gill, Clinton Griffis, currently in fifth place in the bareback standings, is the only other Trapper sitting in the top five of an event at the present time.
