Boys third, girls fourth at Sheridan

The Powell Panthers took their stab at some larger competition last Thursday as the track teams competed at Sheridan, placing fourth in the girls’ standings and third in the boys’ standings. Several competitors turned in season bests performances.

In all, the Panthers qualified five additional event slots for the 3A state championships next month. Four of the five automatic qualifiers came on the girls’ side of the meet.

Distance runners Sierra Morrow and Tally Wells each qualified in an event for the Panthers. Morrow surpassed the qualifying standard in the 1600 to earn her first individual spot at the state meet. In a testimony to the overall talent faced by the Panthers in the Sheridan meet, Morrow placed eighth, despite turning in her qualifying time.

Wells, who already owned an automatic qualifying time in the 1600, added to her slate of state events with a qualification in the 3200 meters. Wells’ time of 12:32 in the race brought her across the finish line in seventh place, but was more than 17 seconds off the time needed to earn a place in the state field.

Also qualifying for the state meet was high jumper Kendra Ostrom, who cleared the bar at 4-11 to place third overall. The Panthers’ 4x400 relay team took 21 seconds off its best time of the season to easily clear the qualifying standard in that event by five seconds.

Elsewhere at the meet, Desiree Murray won the 400 meters in a time of 1:00.42 for the Panthers’ only individual event win on the girls’ side. Murray was also second in the 110-meter hurdles.

KaDee Harrison turned in one of the day’s most impressive performances for Powell, however, as the youngster carved more than a full second off her fastest 200-meter time to date to place second in 28.29 seconds. Harrison also placed fifth in the 100 meter finals in Sheridan.

Marquette McArthur brought home runner-up honors in the discus. Karly Thomas placed third in the 300-meter hurdles.

In junior varsity action, Powell went 1-2-3 in the girls’ shot put. Shawnea Harrington took the title with a throw of just over 31 feet. The Panthers also produced four of the top six JV discus results, with Alice Pinter’s throw of 85-4 leading the way in third place. Jada Swires placed fourth in the JV 100.

On the boys’ side of the ledger, Colby Gillmore was the only new automatic qualifier. Gilmore cruised to a runner-up finish in the 400 in a time of 51.42 to easily surpass both his season best and the automatic qualifying standard for the event.

Gilmore also narrowly missed a place in the state 200-meter field after placing fifth in that race.

Senior Kyle Sullivan won a trio of individual events as he captured top honors in the high jump, the 300-meter hurdles and the 110-meter hurdles, finishing just ahead of teammate Josh Cragoe in the latter race. He also teamed up with Gilmore, Cragoe and Zach Thiel to record a time of 3:29.18 in the 4x400, easily taking top honors in that race as well.

Not to be outdone, senior Drew MaGill won the 200 meters, breaking 23 seconds in that race for the first time this season with a time of 22.75. MaGill went on to add a win in the triple jump, leaping beyond the 42-foot mark, and placed third in the 100 meters.

Cale Anderson found his way into the top eight in a pair of events for the Panthers, placing seventh in both the long jump and the triple jump. Jacob Beuster did likewise, placing fifth in the shot put and fourth in the discus.

At the JV level, Powell had winners in Brendon Phister in the pole vault and Garrett Michael in the shot put. Phister’s winning clearance of 11 feet in the pole vault matched the top performance of any Panther vaulter this season.

Phister narrowly missed adding a second victory for the Panther reserves, finishing second in the 300-meter hurdles.

The Panthers return to action this Friday. The bulk of the team will head to Thermopolis for a local invitational. Some of the Panthers’ top performers, however, will find themselves heading to Casper to compete in the Wyoming Track Classic.

The Classic is an annual showcase of the state’s top track and field performers. Athletes turning in one of the eight fastest times in the 100, 200, 400, 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles this season are invited to compete. The top 10 performances in all other events, plus ties, are invited.

No relay events are held at the Classic.

The official roster for the 2011 Wyoming Track Classic will be finalized later this week.
