PHS finishes as top 3A team
The Powell Panthers turned in a strong performance in less-than-ideal conditions on Friday as they placed third out of 11 teams at the Worland spring golf invitational. Panther Brian Morse tied for eighth place with an 18-hole total of 79.
“We had a very good day in conditions that, while typical of spring golf, were far from ideal,” said Powell coach Troy Hildebrand.
Light rain and even some sleet greeted golfers at times on Friday. Course temperatures were 38 degrees when the first groups teed off and climbed only as high as 44 degrees on the day.
“Fortunately, the wind never came up, so it was manageable,” Hildebrand said.
Despite the adverse conditions, Powell amassed a team score of 323 as the school’s top four golfers bunched together nicely on the final score sheet.
In addition to Morse’s round of 79, the Panthers counted a round of 80 from Vilhelm Sandberg, a round of 81 from Zane Bushnell and an 83 from the scorecard of Bowen Prestwich. Sandberg’s round of 80 put him in a multi-way tie for 11th place.
“I was very pleased with our performance after only being able to spend about three days of practice at our course so far due to weather,” said Hildebrand. “We have a great mix of veteran players and some very talented younger kids that are going to have to step in for us next fall.”
Powell’s coach noted he was exremely pleased by Morse’s round of 79.
He picked up right where he left off,” Hildebrand said. “It was also nice to see Bowen put up a solid first round for the year.”
Sheridan ran away from the tournament field, carding a team total of 296 in the first meet of the spring. Gillette placed second, seven strokes in front of Powell, which was the top 3A school at the meet. Cody (331) and Lander (338) rounded out the top five.
In addition to the Panthers’ four scoring golfers, the team carried three others on its roster for the meet. Colter Adolph carded a round of 95 for Powell. Jared Wantulok was four strokes back with a score of 99 and Cameron Nielson completed Powell’s entry for the day with a round of 100.
“Colter, Jared and Cameron will be critical pieces for us next fall, so it was good to see them put up a decent starting point for the spring,” Hildebrand said.
Powell is scheduled to return to action this Friday at Thermopolis.
