Powell Middle School track meet moved

April 9 meet now slated in Worland

The Powell Middle School track and field meet originally scheduled to take place in Powell on Saturday, April 9, has been moved. The event will now take place in Worland.

Damage to the Powell track, which was discovered earlier this month, prompted the meet’s location to change. Powell High School, which was originally scheduled to host its home invitational on April 16, will instead hold that event in Cody, also due to the condition of the facility.

Todd Wilder, coordinator of support services for the school district, informed the District No. 1 school board earlier this month that the surface of the track has bubbled in some places and cracked in others. He also observed that low spots appear to have developed in places, possibly hinting that the asphalt base under the track surface had deteriorated or that the ground under the track had settled.

As a result, he recommended to the board that the facility not be used for meets with other schools. Both the high school and the middle school continue to use the track for practice sessions.

Wilder also noted that the damage is repairable, but would require an extended period of time when the temperature does not dip below 65 degrees. No such weather conditions are present in the extended forecast for Powell.
