PHS students shine in first competition

Numerous Panther competitors experienced success at the first indoor track meet of the season last weekend. The Powell students, competing as part of the Cody team, played a role in seven of the nine event championships recorded on the day.

Kyle Sullivan took the title in both the 60-meter hurdles and the high jump. Drew MaGill added a first-place finish in the long jump and led a 1-2-3 Powell parade at the top of the 200-meter standings.

Marco Borja and Sullivan placed second and third, respectively, in that race. Sullivan and Borja also joined forces with Powell’s Zach Thiel and Cody’s Colton Wood to capture first place in the 4x400 relay. Thiel was a runner-up in the 800 meters.

“The kid that beat Zach in the 800 was third last year at state and was the highest returning place winner from last year after graduation,” said Panther track coach Scott Smith.

On the girls’ side, Desiree Murray brought home the 400-meter title. Murray also teamed up with a trio of Cody runners to place first in the 4x400 relay.

“Desiree was 10 meters behind with about 60 meters to go,” Smith said of his runner’s anchor leg of the relay. “She made a great comeback to get the win at the end.”

Other top finishers on the day were MaGill (fourth in the 60 meters), Murray (seventh in the 60 meters) and Marquette McArthur (seventh in the shot put). Borja just missed a spot in the 60 meters, placing ninth in the prelims, one-hundredth off the pace needed to advance to the finals. Cameron Bennett placed 15th in the 200 and 18th in the 60 prelims for Powell.

No team scores were kept at the meet, but the Cody-Powell collective captured seven championships on the boys’ side, four more than defending state boys’ indoor champion Sheridan and six more than any other school in attendance. The team potentially left an additional championship on the table as MaGill, the returning state runner-up in the triple jump, was held out of that event.

“We made a pre-meet decision to not have Drew do the triple jump,” said Smith. “It is early in the season.”

Gillette, Kelly Walsh, Worland/Thermopolis and unattached runners from South Dakota, Nebraska and Montana all attended the meet at Black Hills State University.

Next up for the indoor track squad will be an appearance in Gillette this Saturday. In addition to many of the same competitors, the meet should also provide the Panthers with their first look at competition from Cheyenne, Casper Natrona, Laramie and Douglas.

“It will be a much bigger meet,” Smith said of Saturday’s event.
